LA Good Question: Online Source for Succulents?

061108_succ.jpgYesterday's 10 Best Succulents post prompted reader jick to ask: Does anyone know a good place to order succulents online?

We're stumped, we're lucky enough to have a bunch of nurseries close by so have never had to rely on ordering via the web. If possible we recommend finding a local place so that you see the plant before buying it, and get to ask any questions you might have about growing it. Even Home Depot carries a decent selection of succulents if that's all you've got close by.

Otherwise, does anyone know of a good source for buying succulents (and other plants) online?

White Flower Farm is an amazing east coast source (they're located in CT) for all sorts of plants, including succulents. http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/83624-product.html

High Country Gardens (located in NM) has an amazing collection of xeriscape perennials and even includes low water lawns. www.highcountrygardens.com

I was surprised at what a nice selection my local home depot had the last time I went. In case the reader hasn't try shopping at a local HD, give it a shot.

I found a place recommended on Martha Stewart Living. I was going to make a succulent wreath and just ended up ordering one. The wreath/plants were in great shape when they arrived carefully packed in shredded paper. They were shipped to me in Texas from Wisconsin.

Surprisingly, if you know what you are looking for, Ebay is a great source for succulents. I have been able to find rare species that I couldn't find anywhere else.

what's the deal with the recent succulent craze?

@amt230 They must be the only plants AT has heard about.

And seriously--what about the carbon footprint of buying plants anyplace but your local nursery, which doesn't have to mean big box store?

Do you all know the CA Dept. of Agriculture regulations on plant importations?

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Kimberlina - the website looks great from first glance, and surprise, Martha knows best.

DanielleM - CT isn't too far from me, maybe I can find an excuse to go there and get some along the way!

Palmetto - All of the plants that I currently own are from local nurseries. I originally asked the question in response to one of AT's top ten lists of succulents, which had few unavailable in my area. Especially the "golden wave" and the "blue wave."

Maybe it's just the pictures, but they are beautiful!

Well, there's a big show and sale this weekend.

Los Angeles Cactus & Succulent Society

9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with a rare plant auction at sunset on Saturday. Sepulveda Garden Center, 16633 Magnolia Blvd., Encino. (818) 367-0864, www.lacss.com.

There's other drought tolerant plants--salvias, pelargoniums, lantana, verbena, cosmos--and it would be nice to get information about some of these.

Unfortunately, I do not live in CA otherwise I would love to visit the show this weekend. That would be fantastic.

I live in an apartment so most other plants are too large or need too much room to grow properly indoors. I only have the windowsills and most receive sun throughout the day. As a result, it's too sunny for many plants.

My cat ignores my succulents.
There are some that are not people or pet friendly. 'Firesticks' is very pretty, but the sap is caustic and will burn the skin.

The .99 Only Store has 2 inch succulents for only ....surprise, .99 a piece. So far I've had a lot of luck with the more than 10 I bought.

Ebay also has page after page of succulents and cactus up for bid.
