LA Good Question: Platform Beds

072208atlabed1.JPGDear ATLA, I was wondering if anyone knows where to get a platform bed with legs like this. Do platforms like this ever come with headboards? Alternatively, does anyone know a way to make such a bed? Thanks! -Daniel

Daniel, we certainly recognize the bed, as it's the very same Modernica Case Study model sitting in our apartment. The bed does come with a headboard, and there are options for wood or steel hairpin legs, with an assortment of finishes. In regards to your DIY sourcing requests, we have a few under the jump...

072208atlabed2.jpgIf you're handy enough, perhaps you could put together your own platform bed with some hairpin legs from Hairpinlegs.com. Taking a look at our own Modernica model, we note the platform itself is not just a flat solid platform, but has a perforated metal mesh grid work to let the mattress breathe.

Other ideas include forgoing the hairpin setup and creating one with storage underneath like these:

The mattress has to be 8" thick, or it looks really awful.

Agree with Entenza. One of those thick 18" to 20" mattresses look awful on a platform. DWR sells a great mattress for platform beds. http://www.dwr.com
Then you have to deal with all the fitted sheets out there made for extra deep mattresses. You can't win :)

The Modernica platform bed looks great. Does anyone have one? How would you rate it?

I have the king size case study bed from Modernica.net with the steel hairpin legs. We got it in the mahogany stain. This bed is built like a tank and is as heavy as one too! I was worried about how strong this bed would be, because I'm a big dude (300 lbs.) This bed is not going to buckle under me. If you can afford to fork over the dough (cause it's kinda pricey), I suggest to do it.

2 of these http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70122215 fit a king and queen sized mattress...comfortably. we made our own headboard. we're looking to build our own bed, later on, but this works for now.

How sturdy is the Tolga from ikea? I know other people have talked about it on here before.

The thing i'm looking for is a temporary bed. We have an air mattress and when we have guests, it unfortunately goes on the floor. those things that spread out liker camp chairs bit are for air mattresses are really expensive and big to store.

So I would love something that i could kind of move out of the way or put up against the wall, tolga frame might look cool painted and use it as a wall covering. Then when we have guests put it back together and put the mattress on it.

Thoughts on that or a better solution. It doesn't have to be fancy since it's ust my parents visiting or my sister, but my parents are older and the floor mattress isn't the best height option. Plus i don't really want to buy another to get the double height kind. We have a really good one, it was expensive, it's just short.

STLMod or anyone else who has a Modernica case study bed. you mention it being very heavy, which is good once it is upstairs in our bedroom. but is it so heavy that we should consider forking over the extra $ to have white glove delivery to get it up there? we're planning to finally pull the trigger this week.

Why do think mattresses look bad on a platform? We just bought a thick mattress (at least 12" but I haven't measured) and wanted a platform. We didn't choose this mattress for ourselves but ended up with it anyway (a long, family-related story that I won't get into here). We want a modern, low-to-floor bed (like a platform) -- any comments or suggestions? Thanks.

the case study bed is very, very sturdy and well built. Extremely comfortable. We love it. I bumped my shins on it a couple of times the first week but quickly learned how to avoid this. Now it's not a problem at all. Our mattress is 8" but I think you could go with a thicker one. You'd have to drill holes to adjust the headboard and make it taller.

Modernica has an amazing sale once a year - my friend bought her case study bed for $650 for a queen. I have a Leggero platform bed from DWR and love it. You can also check craigslist for platform beds - I always see both of these on sale for great prices.

With a thicker mattress - the bed does not look as sleek and looks more bulky.

outonalimb, I would imagine that a thick mattress is considered less attractive on a platform because platforms tend to accentuate the fact that they are long and low. Which a thick mattress detracts from.

Speaking of mattresses, I have two mattress related dilemmas that I'd love to find a solution for. I like thin, firm (definitely no pillow top) mattresses. does anyone know of a good source for a quality thin mattress in full? There is my other dilemma, does anyone know of a source of quality bedding, with an MCM feel, in full? It has become impossible to find full size bedding around here that isn't geared toward children. We can't be the only adult couple capable of sleeping comfortably on a full size bed.

nrKist--

I sleep on a full-sized bed too - and I don't have issues finding good sheets, duvet covers, blankets, etc. via online resources such as Lands' End, Overstock, Smartbargains, West Elm, Crate and Barrel, etc.

For mod bed covers, there's always http://foldbedding.com/
(their wall decor and mobiles are pretty groovy too)

I looked at the Case Study bed and decided against it - I move too much! Its very solid and VERY heavy. I went with the Min bed from DWR instead and love it. It is super sleek, low profile, but has a lot of room underneath for my portfolios to lie flat. Its also very low to the ground, which is great because my old bed used to absolutely dominate the bedroom space.

About a year later i got one of the memory foam mattresses from DWR (they had a good sale going - something like 15%) Gotta say that was also worth the money! Who knew sleeping was supposed to feel good! Lol.

We have a Modernica Case Study Bed (which is actually a reproduction of a George Nelson design, by the way) in our daughter's room. It's great, and we used an IKEA mattress on it, which is very comfortable. I agree that they are sturdy, but I didn't think it was that heavy. I was able to lift it and set it up in my daughter's room by myself without any problem. Here's a link for a photo of her bed (and a few quotes by me) in an article at EichlerNetwork. http://www.eichlernetwork.com/spot_modernkids.html

We have a queen size case study bed that we love. It is extermely sturdy and heavy. One problem we had with our is that the grooves on the bottom of the steel legged version damaged our hardwood floors. Unless you have carpeting, I would recommend purchasing some clear plastic floor protectors with this bed.

When does Modernica have their sale on case study beds? I'd love to get one on sale!

Hi, there. Thought I'd chime in as that's my photo of our apartment at the top there. Thanks to my lovely sister-in-law for letting me know my bedroom shot was posted on AT. We got our bed from Design Within Reach (who offer the size we have - queen - for a few hundred dollars less than Modernica, unless you can catch that sale mentioned above). It's ridiculously comfortable, thanks more to the mattress than the frame, I imagine. Rubber coasters to protect wood floors are a must - you can see in the photo that we use them. This is the only piece of new, non-used furniture that we own, and it's awesome. I highly recommend it.

hello! i have slept on a platform bed since i was, oh i don't know, five, and i absolutely love them! no need for a box spring and i absolutely cannot stand soft mattresses and am convinced that the platform bed makes the mattress firmer. have made both my adult platform beds, one a twin and one a full, and if you are moderately crafty i think that making one is an excellent, fulfilling, relatively inexpensive project!

THis post didn't really answer the question presented. Where to find the bed in the initial picture. The Modernica is outrageously expensive. Anything for a real down to earth not extravagent budget?

protogarrett -

The bed in the initial photo is a case study bed produced by Modernica. As another poster mentioned, it is a reproduction of an original George Nelson design, but finding the original would probably cost more for Modernica. In another thread a month or so ago, someone posted a homemade version that fit their budget.

As to answer my own question, we finally saved up for one and ordered the bentwood version of the bed. the platform wasn't necessarily to heavy, but being one solid piece it proved a challenge for our steep stairs. We ended up using a boom crane and sent it through the window. So my only advice on ordering one is that you need to make sure you have a way to get it inside and upstairs (assuming you have multiple levels or live off first-floor). It will not bend.

In the end, we love it and our glad we slept on an old frame for a while to save for this one.

drjt2002: I think I picked up the coasters at a dollar store, but I'm sure you could get them at a Bed, Bath, and Beyond type of place. Good luck in the hunt.

dru: In regard to your comment to Protogarrett, the bed in the initial photo isn't from Modernica (see my first comment, five spots up). Really. I swear. I took the photo of it (which Daniel, the reader who initiated this post, must have found on my blog), and I can attest that the bed is from DWR. It's cheaper than the Modernica version, but they look exactly the same.
