We've had some great questions sent to us recently and this one is no exception.
It comes from Jill:
"What should I put above the couch? I have very tall ceilings, that could stand up to a big piece of artwork. I've been trying to bring more blue in the room (with the chair and the little picture frames)"
See a larger picture and leave your suggestions after the cut:

Thanks for the question Jill. First things first, we think if you want to work more blue into the room you may want to work in some pillows on the sofa or some display items on the coffee table. A lighter blue might bring some depth to the colors in the living room. As for above the sofa, we think a grouping of photos or paintings might be better than one giant painting. But having said that, you can find great Marimmeko wall hangings at Textile Arts which could be a lot cheaper than finding a large piece of art. They come in so many different colors that you're bound to find something that will enhance the blue.
What do you guys think?

I'd do three tall rectangular panels of interesting, coordinating fabric until you find a piece of art you really love.

I have a very similar living area. I also have a couch along this tall wall. I have the same vaulted ceiling. I received some very good design advice from a very talented designer. She suggested I put a painting or a group of paintings, or other artwork, that was at least 3 feet tall and at least four feet wide, preferably 4.5 feet wide. I had two prints above the sofa that I thought were substantial, but they weren't. The new prints aren't my absolute favorite(I picked them out on my own and art is pricey)but the size works so much better than my previous smaller prints. I didn't have a focal point such as a fireplace or beautiful window, so the art above the sofa needed to be the focal point.

Just because you have high ceilings there, don't feel like the art above the sofa has to fill it. I'd be more inclined to do a large-scale horizontal, perhaps a modern landscape canvas, something that will bridge your colors and bring in a range of blues.
If looking for "filler" or "spaceholder" art, I've had great luck lately with Ballard Designs and Overstock.

And I agree with Laure that THAT blue might not work the best with your other colors.

I agree with P(too) on this one. A large-sale horizontal piece would look great. Let the high ceiling stand out as a feature of its own.

Mirror/s: either one large mirror panelled across, or get a hold of several smallers ones to create the look of one large one.

I'm seeing a pair of vintage leaded-glass windows, preferably arched in shape. Neutral colored frames, colored glass if you like.

How about a hand-embroidered ceremonial robe of Nigeria's Yoruba or Hausa tribes? They're large, blue "read" horizontally and come in interesting shapes. Not too expensive. http://www.adire.clara.net/agbadagallery.htm

Check out patchwork quilts on ebay. One could be hung using a dowel through a horizontal pocket, or from multiple bulldog clips. Often a nice graphic cheap solution to filling a large space.

Since you're World Market fans, why not get two (or four) Casablanca Mirrors to go above it? Cover your bolsters in a blue fabric and kindly tell me where you got the green lattice pillow. I have the same rug and it would go nice in my place too. ;)

Oh, and paint the wall blue behind the mirrors, like a casual frame.

Get a nice horizontal piece of art, but only if you really love it. Don't worry about getting a piece with blue in it (see my pet decorating peeves post) because you can always incorporate blue in your accessories. Buy art that you love, and that you can take with you when you move to another space. Just my 2 cents...

I have a similar problem. A HUGE white wall, (landlord won't let me paint). I bought two types of designer looking gift wrapping paper that are different but complimentary and framed large pieces of them. this way you're basically only paying for the frames. I hung those on the outside of the walls and on the inside i strung 5 ribbons from the cieling down and placed small frames towards the bottom of each ribbon. the freames have black and white personal photos. i know this sounds like a lot of stuff but my wall is HUGE.

How about a blue tray on that coffee table? It could be any material and you could contain your mags and remotes on it.

We took a square candle holder sold at crate and barrel for our client and hung it above the sofa....check it out...www.asdinteriors.com

I had the same exact question and am so glad you asked it.
I've been trying to find something for over the sofa...such an art cliche...and have been having fun in the abstract circles category at allposters.com. They also let you search by color if you're interested. I'm thinking something canvas mounted...hmmm. However, seeing all those circles makes me want to get crafty and just make something myself.

Wow! Thanks guys for all the good suggestions. I like the idea of doing a blue tray on the coffee table, and adding lighter blue pillows.
I'm really liking the sound of a pair of vintage leaded-glass windows, but a grouping of paintings sounds good too.
Lady J - I got the green lattice pillow at Home Goods.

i like the cream, green, and dark wood thing you've got going on. it's very restful. blue will be weird ... but that's just me and i'm NOT a designer or anything.

I think you need a set of japanese screens. Seems like that would do your house good. Also, start to consider trading in your coffee table for something bigger.
