LA Good Question: Where Can I Find Retro-modern Cabin Furnishings for a Rustic Studio?

atla06240801494.jpg"I'm about to move into a really special, historic cabin-like oasis in Eagle Rock and am desperate to find stores/websites that carry retro or modern camp-like decor. I just bought some great metal dishes from Pottery Barn. But am in need of a bed, bedding, chairs, a rug, etc. Pretty much everything! Any resources (for the above listed items or other accents) would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!" -Elisabeth

062408kellygreendesign.jpgCongrats Elisabeth, your new Eagle Rock abode sounds like a house tour in the making. We'd recommend you first make a trip down to the Rose Bowl Flea Market to find vintage era details that you could modernize with a coat of paint. But if you're looking for a retail option for camp-like decor, we'd recommend you come on down to our neck of the woods to Sunset Junction and check out Kelly Green and Reform School, both carry furnishings and decor items that would easily play into the the woodsy chic look you're looking for.

ooh i love it! I would go with rich wood furniture; maybe a day bed with curtains around it to double the functionality, and mix-and-match wood frames with vintage prints everywhere. Textiles in brown and coffee and cream, with some rich blues and teals and oranges and browns. I love the cottage feel idea!

Long Beach Swap Meet at the Veterans stadium is a good source.it's the third sunday of every month.

Check out the Orange Circle in Orange. Lots of antique malls with great vendors. There is also a store called Woody's that specializies in Heywood Wakefield and mid century pieces. Family owned and operated with fair pricing.

Elisabeth, your new place is amazing! I'm a little jealous, but glad you're moving in to the neighborhood (I'm in Highland Park)...

don't forget the PCC flea market that happens on the 1st Sunday of every month...It's definitely more manageable than the Rose Bowl and sometimes vendors are a bit more into bargains.

There are a couple places you should check out on Colorado for accessories at least. There's a super cute shop next to La Petite Bougelais, but I can't recall the name now...

best of luck- hope to see some "after" photos!

That is SO BEAUTIFUL, the area and the way the space is set up with many of your needs taken care of right away. The bookshelves, for instance.

Since we're dealing with a small space, I would HIGHLY recommend taking ACCURATE measurements of your space. Every single part of it. Not just the floor space...but the interior sizes of the cabinets, the depth, width and HEIGHT of the bookcases, every nook and cranny. INCLUDE YOUR FRONT PORCH AS A ROOM!!!

You have a good 4-5' of depth on that porch that can and should be utilized space. Not just something crammed out there as an afterthought, but something you would really USE.

You can make layouts on many sites now, you don't have to do what I did way back when, with graph paper and cutting out my potential furniture to be sure it would fit. Here's the Tools and Guides section at BHG:
http://www.bhg.com/tools/

And a link right to Arrange A Room:
http://www.bhg.com/decorating/arrange-a-room/
(guess how many pop-ups I saved you from having to look at? LOL)

Front porch could handle most of your dining needs, like here:

A lot of that could be found via Craigslist, mismatched wood chairs and a table, that you can paint and then let weather. This one is OBVIOUSLY too big, but it gives you an idea:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/fur/731319326.html
Or pick up something like this:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/fur/731320539.html
And you can use folding chairs too, $30:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/fur/731312595.html
hanging them up when not in use, as was shown on AT SF here at Flora Grubb:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/san-francisco/flora-grubb-054058
And pick up a very inexpensive gateleg table here for $30 (with chairs):
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/fur/731443677.html

Between the folding chairs and the table, you can instantly seat 4 people, or have the table take up no room at all, and serve as a plant stand (outside) with the folded chairs hung on a bike holder.

If you have a bit of a yard, you put out a couple lounge chairs, again, Craigslist, a pair of teak loungers, look good, $100:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/fur/731328790.html

So you CAN have people over, and seat them, in various places, and we haven't even gone inside the new home yet.

Keeping it super rustic on the outside also helps prevent the potential for crime, as in having someone run off with your expensive new stuff. It's OK to let these things weather, and not to stress out about the fear of "THE FIRST SCRATCH".

Save the money for indoors and your comfort. Can you give me an idea of what is "retro-modern cabin"?

A friend showed me your post and suggested you may be interested in a bed I am making. I am currently making a 4 post bed with reclaimed pine trees, redwood and douglas fir. It has a rustic feel. Let me know if you're interested and I can send some pictures. The web album is of my last bed and gives you an idea of the vibe. Take care.
