LA Good Questions: Affordable Modern Door Handles?

atla031908OMN-11-2.jpgAT:LA reader David writes in with a question about interior door hardware sourcing:

We're replacing the interior doors in our place and love Omnia's line of modern interior door handles (especially the one in the picture attached) but find the prices to be a little on the steep side. Has anyone had any luck finding clean, modern door handles that look like this but don't cost $100?

David, the Omnia Single Dummy Lever you're partial to is available online for $45 online (the normal dual version is available for $84.75 and there's a similarly shaped handle for $60.75). And of course, there's always eBay.

If those are still too expensive, Kwikset has a selection of modern levels (though obviously not as minimal-modern) for a very affordable price in brass, chrome or brushed finishes. Anyone else out there have some suggestions for David.

Emtek has well-made solid metal hardware for slightly less. Check their Modern Collection.

David,

Where are you getting your interior doors from?

Thanks

SDH Double Hill has an excellent, simple and inexpensive line called "Princeton" that you can get from West End Lumber for around $50 a door:

Thanks for the great suggestions so far everyone!

As for doors, I don't know where I'll get them from (frankly, I could use some advice there too). Definitely solid hardwood, probably painted white. I like panel doors, but don't know if they would look good with a modern handle, so I may just get a flat door.

I have Omnia handles on Simpson shaker doors. Shaker doors will go well with modern handles. If you're going to paint the doors, you should consider passing on the solid hardwood...it'll save you a lot of money.

good luck

I've ordered a number of items from Homeclick.com and have never had any problem.

I, too, have modern handles on the Simpson Shaker doors (the simplest, single recessed panel style). Mine are painted MDF. You'd never know the difference. Saves trees, saves money, plus they don't shrink and expand with humidity changes.

I have those pictured Omnia levers all over my house. Pieces of garbage! The so-called "privacy" levers are anything but; just a couple of shakes of the handle and the doors are unlocked. But they are beautiful though.

I replaced out old brass doorknobs with milan series from Emtek. Emtek has good quality and I am quite happy with them. For them to lock properly - like any other handle system - the hardware on the frame has to line up perfectly with the one in the door - then they lock perfect and stay locked. I bought them here but it doesn't seem like they carry emtek anylonger...
