Due to our cautionary tale of the CB Rug Shed-Off, AT:LA reader Mary sent us this query:
Hi AT,
I'm thinking about buying some FLOR modular carpet tiles to create an 8x10 area rug. Since there have been some AT posts lately about certain rugs from Ikea, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, etc. that keep on shedding for years, does anyone know if FLOR carpet tiles shed? Thanks for the help!
-Mary
PS: I am considering the styles, "Rake Me Over" and "Moon"

I love carpet tiles because the don't shed and my cats can't pull out the pile. The reason why regular cotton or wool rugs shed so much is the small natural fibers of the yarns come loose if it's not very high quality; also the pile is individual cut pieces of yarn which are easy to pull out. Carpet tile made from nylon fibers are usually woven from a continuous yarn by machine and will not come apart unless you really try to tear at it. Also nylon yarns are synthetic and do not have the shedding problem of natural fibers. I don't have the particular FLOR tiles you named, but the most durable type will be a nylon loop pile, which is what I have. It's still soft underfoot but it doesn't have that cushy-ness of a cut pile.

I can't speak for the styles you are looking at, but I have the Home Movies line and they do not shed.
I highly recommend the Flor tiles- easy to install, looks great- I get so many compliments, and so easy to clean (I have a dog).

they don't shed.
i do recommend getting darker colors as they seem to get dirty rather easily. also, something with a soft or thick pile. mine were wool with a velvety texture and weren't very soft or comfortable.
i found myself scrubbing them in the sink very often, until i had a party, didn't feel like cleaning all of them and threw them out in favor of a shag rug.

Nope, no shedding from what I've heard.
A friend of mine uses them as a rug in her apartment - I want to say it's 5x4 tiles, maybe? They look fabulous and are easy to clean - only problem is she has a kitty that likes to tear them up pretty badly. She keeps thinking about getting rid of them, but I don't think it's too noticeable. Love them as a rug!

If you have kitties definitely go with a short, synthetic loop pile. There's not much they can do to pull the fibers out of the backing.

Do this many grown ups REALLY say "kitty"? Really?

Patrick (the other one), yes, grown ups say kitty... and puppy. Regardless of the age of the animal. :)

And, apparently, regardless of the age of the grown up.

I say kitty on a grown-up day... most other days it's kitty-cattums, kitten-cat, or itsy-bitsy kitten boy (despite the fact that he's a 19 pounds and 11 years old)...

We got rid of our FLOR after just a couple of years -- a cool idea, and it looked great at first, but it gets cheap and grungy-looking in a surprisingly short period of time. Not worth the money, IMHO.

jeccat--
I just threw up a furball.

...have my FLOR in the basement so we can pull it up before or after a flood. No shedding and still in good shape after several years but ours is a tight, no-nap style. Our cheap IKEA rug upstairs was vacuumed daily for months and cost us a small fortune in vaccum cleaner bags.

I've been uhhming and ahhing about buying Flor tiles (Solid Ground) for awhile now for my 2 year olds room. I love the colors available but am worried about reviews complaining about how grungy looking they get. Does anyone have any experience with the "Solid Ground" line? Thanks!

Thanks for posting my question so quickly. And thanks to everyone for their comments. I'm glad to hear that FLOR tiles don't shed except for some cat-related shedding. I think I'm going to order my FLOR tiles very soon.

I have Solid Ground Flor tiles in my living room, and I'm desparate to get rid of them. They stain very easily, and it's no fun to remove the tiles and scrub them out in the sink. Mine look horribly grungy after 2 years of use, even though I vacuum them weekly and clean them regularly. And I have no pets!
You're better off buying a used wool rug that no longer sheds.
I'm going to get a replacement rug and put my Flor tiles in the garage where no one can see them.

I have two different types of FLOR in my apartment. The one in the entryway is awesome, doesn't shed, and looks like an expensive rug. The one in my bedroom is equally awesome and doesn't shed, BUT it collects lint like it's friggin' velcro. Even my Dyson can't get the lint up. I have to manually detach the lint. Where does it all come from? Are my towels really that sheddy?
And I have two kitties. I say kitties because when I say "cats" people get scared I'm some sort of cliche cat-lady with a dozen screeching monsters poo-ing everywhere. Or something like that.

if you have a cat, you have a cat. i call mine my "animal". calling it a kitty makes me think you dress it up and stuff. on Flor tiles- i have to say that i have some old zooty tooth tiles in my entry and they are awesome- they're really durable and don't show dirt- no shedding at all. i do work in a store that sells them and i get very few returns of tiles- the only complaint i've heard was that the dark tiles show lint- but that's true of any solid, dark rug.

I have the Checkered Past and Twill Ride tiles in my living room. Have had them for 5 months and so far so good. They shed for the first week and are good now. Dont know if they will get grungy over time. But given the fact I spent $300 for a 9 by 10 its a worthwhile experiment given I live in an apartment with a peculliar configuration.

I carpeted the bedroom (wall to wall) in Toy Poodle MooMoo Black (which, by the way, is a very dark brown, not black...). They were installed 4 months ago and I am very pleased. No shedding, no sliding or shifting, and they are holding up well so far.

We have both Toy Poodle and House Pet in our home and they both haven't shed a bit, for what it's worth!

trish b - what kind of flor tiles do you have and which is the one that looks good still?
view karinab's profile
I would have to look up what they are, but I've only had them a few weeks, so it's not like they've held up over the years or something.
