Online Resources for Zebra Print Rugs

atla-042308-zebra01.jpgMaybe it's just because we have one in our bedroom but we've been noticing all the zebra and zebra print rugs in this year's Small Cool Contest. Reader Aulaire wanted to know where we scored our zebra print cowskin. Before we found ours on Craig’s List (Yay Craig!) from a great girl who sold it to us for a song and had it drycleaned for us, we had located some online resources for this classic pattern. Our finds, after the jump...

  • Sunland Home Décor imports their cowhides from Brazil and Argentina. The zebra print rugs are on sale here for $289. Check out their khaki dyed cowhide and their beautiful brindles.
  • Southern Hides carries them in sizes up to 65 feet; they also carry some crazy colours (orange with black stripes anyone?)
  • Fur Rugs also gets their cowhides from Brazil. You can also find cowhide ottomans here and, occasionally, natural unbleached white hides.

Or I could just click on the link for the photo and find out it is from Cole & Sons. When are we getting the edit/delete button for comments?

Where can we find nice and affordable zebra-printed and -shaped rugs that aren't animal hide? Thanks.

search ebay for zebra rugs and you'll also find several people/companies selling zebra print cowhide (and possible non-animal) rugs.

2nd Pteetsa's comment. Are any available that aren't made from animal hide? Knowing that an animal died for my rug would make me extremely sad.

I want that chair...
...and these aren't real zebra hides - they're printed cowhides.
(same stuff shoes are made from...)

Here's a non-animal zebra rug from West Elm...

...tho it isn't much better, as it's made from polyester (which is a Petroleum product)

bepsf,

The West Elm zebra rug says that it's made of wool, not polyester. I think.

the desire to have animal hide, or something that looks like animal hide, prominently and permanently displayed in my home is profoundly unappealing. i don't get why people go for these. seems just as bad as those big stuffed, mounted deer heads.

FLOR carpet tiles Europe has Zebra print squares:

You can actually buy wall to wall in animal print:

Squares and rectangles:

And runners too (plus more squares, rectangles and rounds):

WalMart has a small, inexpensive rectangle with the pattern of the back:

Just so you'll know - the cow didn't die for your rug. The cow died for your McDonald's.

No, no, LBhirise, the cow died for our Jello brand gelatin!

More neat images of zebra rugs:

Since the rug is so trendy, it will be so out of style pretty soon. So only get it if you LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I did zebra print in the late 60's. I had/have a zebra print sleeping bag that is black vinyl on the outside. So mod.

Overstock has wool zebra:
http://www.overstock.com/search?taxonomy=cat244&searchtype=guidedNav&additionalKeywords=zebra&x=7&y=12

So as not to follow the trend, but to enjoy the colors and patterns, maybe choose something different, like the round they show.

Or something that is neither zebra nor brocade:

Oops, that one's sold out. But you get the idea.

It's probably just a sign that I read domino magazine too much but if I see another zebra rug I will go crazy. ESPECIALLY if paired in any way with a Ghost Chair.

My cat is afraid of anything that resembles animal hide or fur, even fake fur, so I could never have an animal hide rug. She's a little spazzy, but I still like her.

RML--

Lots of rugs, from many places, at many price points, shed. Just because the rug you bought is from there, and sheds, does not mean that: A) All rugs from West Elm shed or B) rugs from ONLY West Elm shed.

i love the print and black and white together, but also felt weird/sad about having the actual animal shape (or hide) on my floor, so was really happy to find a rectangluar version at world market... plus, it's only $95!

As others have pointed out, the animal connection is a bit...unsavory (at least to me). I think it's the shape that drives that home the most, so you could always buy a zebra-print rug (in geometric form).
