One of our favourite bloggers, Mary Jo Matsumoto of
Trust Your Style posed this question that we think is a very common decor dilemma: I love modern furniture but the main pieces in my house are not modern. Is it okay to make the kitchen/attached sitting room modern even though the front of the house is filled with older pieces? I'd like to put in a white Saarinen table and some white eiffel chairs by the patio doors and either a small white Knoll couch or a charcoal couch like this one (above) in the attached room.

The tough part is finding common ground between the lines and color or an intentional looking juxtaposition.
Frank Lloyd Wright had lots of advise "rules". Then he explained why he broke each one upon occasion!
The ultimate test of course is: Do you like it?
If so, it works. If not, someone here saying it is okay will never make it feel right to you.
Good luck!
