-- Seriously, this has to be equally as rude and stupid as Anna's quote.

No. The quote is a bit out of context. It's about books, not shelves, let alone about decorating. It was written by someone for whom books are about content, not as objects -- how to arrange a stack of volumes decoratively.

Looks like someone didn't really read the quote [looking above]. Rude and stupid, seriously.

She is saying that she wants her children to be voracious readers. It really isn't an insult to decorating. I think either you are a little too thin skinned or feel a bit guilty about not reading to consider this rude. And I agree with Jonathan it is about not viewing books as objects. Which is why I personally hate when people display their books by color.

I remember books by their colour. I was recently bored and at home and started arranging books by colour. Now I can't find anything because I'm looking for a book with a red binding in a shelf of all red bindings.
I find this alternately hysterically amusing and incredibly annoying.
It should be noted that I have way too many books and understand completely what Quindlen is talking about.
