“My passion for design follows the same methodology as the vinyl junkie's. Record collecting is about pastoral nostalgia — joining the Kinks in the craving of an unsullied village green, or the beautiful loneliness of a train engineer on a forgotten Southern railroad as essayed by R.E.M. in the 1980's. Furniture collecting can evoke the same exact mood, but with a mod twist. It's wishing you could sit in a conversation pit by Alexander Girard by the fire in a Santa Fe home in 1972, or be Pierre Koenig himself in the famous Julius Shulman photograph of Case Study House No. 21.”

That coffee table isn't a "Name" piece - those biomorphic/kidney shaped tables were a dime-a-dozen back in the 50's, and are easily replicated today w/ standard tapered legs from Ace Hardware (see yesterday's post) and plywood.
The more interesting pieces are the Mulhauser Chair and Ottoman by Plycraft, and the Bitossi covered Bird Dish on the cocktail table

Or its just about things that work well. I'm sick of hanging out with friends who need to apologize that their Ikea chair is broken, or that their place has as much personality as a waiting room.
Good design is recognizing that your environment affects your life.
