"God takes care of the garden, but the Devil takes care of the lawn."
Just had to share this chuckle-inducing line we noted and quoted by a bonnet-wearing, dear old lady at the opening of Louis Malle's God's Country, which also notes American's love affair with the lawn mower. Our apartment's garden must be purgatory.

Ha ha ha! A garden writer I can't remember also remarked that the lawn is antisocial. A garden is tended; one can speak to the neighbor over the hedge. But a lawn is mowed, which drowns out conversation.
