Good Quotes: Throw Pillows

082609benstiller.jpg"Oh, and by the way, I threw away all your little throw pillows. Yea. Cuz throw pillows suck. They serve no purpose. They're purely decorative."

– Ben Stiller as Reuben Feffer in Along Came Polly

Yeah, I know some people are huge fans of throw pillows in multitude, but even a decor-friendly gent like myself has to agree with Reuben on this one. One or two throw pillows are attractive and aid in comfort. But when you start inching into numbers that require stacking and layering them upon the bed or couch, it becomes a serious case of overindulgence that provides neither comfort or practical use (especially since you have to put them away somewhere while you sleep or sit on a couch). At least that's how I personally feel when surrounded by an army of pillows.

Noting a past survey, I think I'm in the minority though...I'm surprised to see people with upwards of 9 pillows on their bed. I guess I'm just a pillow monogamist.

The only place I have throw pillows is on my daybed which has a hard back and a too-wide seat, so you need some bulk. But they're all slippy and awkward, I'm thinking of getting some sort of proper bolster and doing away with most of them. Oh, I lie - my two comfy chairs have one each, for back support. Apart from that, I like the idea, but they mostly end up on the floor. I'm with teh mens on this one. :)

I love throw pillows, that's a lie, I love all pillows. I have stacks and stacks, they never end up on the floor except for sitting on, I actually have a chair but usually I toss a pillow down and sit on it instead.

I've got four on the couch (two are kind of sad and deflated but comfy for scrunching up against the arm of the couch) and zero everywhere else. I like the look well enough but they get tossed on the floor and the cats shed on them.

I feel you! I have a friend who has too many! Every time I go over there, I have to move a million pillows to sit down. Most irritating.

I like throw pillows because they're a (usually) cheap, easy way to add color or texture to a room. But I tend to be a pillow minimalist in real life. I have two on my couch, one for my desk chair (lower back issues), and none on my bed (just four bed pillows).

Reminds me of the Coupling episode where Steve has a little rant about throw pillows! Amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp0-8Ibkczc

I have 6 decorative ones for my bed, but they're too nice to throw on the floor.

What does everyone else do with theirs?

I've been dying to ask this one for awhile.

I have three pillows on my bed: One for me, one for bub, one to snuggle with :) I want to get some shams eventually, possibly one little dinky decorator pillow. But that's about it. My assistant manager at work has TEN. Ten! What the hell are you going to do with ten pillows? Do people wash these? What if they get dusty? UGH. This ruins my life.

I'm 5'4". Hubs is 6'2". When we were shopping for our sofa, he won, and without a pillow or two behind my back, my legs would stick out like a little kid. Those little "couch parasites" can actually serve a purpose.

However, decorative pillows on a bed are completely superfluous, unnecessary, useless, etc, etc.

I have to agree with most here - a lot of times throw pillows don't serve much of a function than to look pretty. I get so annoyed at some of my in-law's places where I see a dozen throw pillows on the couch - if you have to take up a whole chair or most of the floor in pillows so people can sit on the couch, it has went beyond help.

Here we have two on the couch - mostly because the arms are a tiny bit worn and whoever sits on the end will want them to not feel wood push into them. The futon has two or three for comfort and to make it give it an ounce of color (it's solid black). The bed only has one throw pillow - along with the four bed pillows that stay there. Tossing one throw pillow into a chair at night doesn't seem horrible and somehow it keeps the bed looking more polished when made up.

We have two on the couch because it's a great place to watch a movie or take a nap. They have removable covers so they can be washed frequently.

Throw pillows on a single chair are a no-no. It's a place to sit, not a display case for a pillow.

One decorative pillow- thats it. I have some extras for my couch stashed away, but those were originally used to make my dorm bed look like a couch and now are just too much.

I have five pillows on my bed - two for each head plus a u pillow that usually covers my face (I am thingy about light, yes, I look weird but I sleep well!) but sometimes some of them end up on a chair for the night. Pillows on the bed that are just for looks? WTF???

Thing is, I have decorative cushions around, but only if they're ALSO functional. Otherwise it's like those fruit bowls with little wicker balls in them on the coffee table. In theory, sure, it looks kind of nice. In practice... what?
