We spotted this sweet and inspiring story over at A Tiny House Blog and wanted to share it with you, Apartment Therapy readers. April and Keith had some unexpected life changes in 2008 but took a positive perspective and decided to make their distant future happen in the present by building a small family home to enjoy. With help from family and friends, their tiny house materialized and they incorporated a clever small space idea right inside. See what it is after the jump.
The couple designed the very small interior to have zones by creating a half-wall out of salvaged frames. Not only does this have a nice visual impact but it provides an opportunity to make the 1 room feel like 2 rooms and then some. The open frames also allow for tons of light to still stream through the space, which was a big priority for the couple - windows! Aside from the room divider, the couple has included green solutions like solar panels and rain barrels have been purchased to augment water use.

We personally love the couple's positive and fresh perspective on building their tiny home, citing their love of outdoors (who needs a big house when you can enjoy laying on a hammock between 2 fruit trees?), their careful dividing of funds to pay for the smaller mortgage and the fact that they get along so well, a small space for the pair simply works. Rock on, April and Keith!

I like the window wall. Looks like they watched High Fidelity, eh?

I liked the window wall and I liked the couple's positive, can-do spirit. The way they are holding onto each other in the photo says it all. I'm not sure what "set-backs" they had, but I'd like to know more about them. In some ways, I think they are facing forward very well.

good luck to them - what a lovely place.

Very inspirational - it is great to be able to step back and consider what is important and materialism is not the path to happiness. They look most proud of their achievements! I wish them health and happiness.

April here! Thanks for picking up the story, AT! We actually hadn't remembered (consciously) the High Fidelity wall, but the idea came from somewhere... We don't have solar panels just yet, but we're working on that. The positive feedback has been overwhelming. We'll be doing another feature on tinyhouseblog.com once the house is finished, so stay tuned. Questions about the project can be directed to letsgogetsometacos@gmail.com.
Thanks again for the exposure!
