If Santa brought you a new computer or cell phone this past holiday, then just a little reminder that you can recycle your old one. Earth911.org is a great resource where you can find local e-waste recycling sites that are open to the public. Additional information and a FAQ section can also be found on the site. Another place is your local Best Buy. They have set up drop boxes in the entry of each store. They accept old cell phones, inkjet cartridges, and rechargeable batteries for recycling. There are also self mailer envelopes and labels for people who wish to send in their old inkjet and toner cartridges from home.

Cell phones in working condition can be reassigned, then donated to victims of domestic violence, or to military serving overseas. Some phone companies provide free cell service to victims of domestic violence who have restraining orders in place. Some companies donate the phones to military overseas (my family member received one with a very steeply discounted calling plan).
Working cell phones can usually be returned to the place where you purchased it, specifically in order to donate to one of these programs, and some police departments and city halls also accept them.
As of last July 1, all cell phone companies are required by law to take back your old cell phone and dispose of it properly.
Also before you return that cell phone visit to see how to erase your personal info:
