I have to say I'm a big fan of Council President Eric Garcetti. He's visibly active in my community working to improve living standards in the 13th district. And even more impressively, he's been busy online, listening to his constituency. Now Garcetti and L.A. City Councilman Ed Reyes have launched the very first citywide plastic bag recycling program, complimenting Assemblymember Lloyd Levine's legislation which requires all stores greater than 10,000 square feet will soon have on-site plastic bag collection centers.
Considering Californians use on average 552 plastic bags per person annually, this is a notable step in the right direction. Trust me, after walking through a trash heap of washed-up plastic bags and garbage on the Long Beach Belmont shoreline this weekend, I'm all for legislation which forces businesses and consumers alike to think beyond convenience, and to consider the environmental impact of their habits and purchases. Way to go Garcetti! Our shores and streets thank you.

That's great news!

Love it! Now we just have to work on recycling for apartment residents! Or Multi-Family homes, if you will.

That is excellent! I hope this somehow also applies to Orange County residents. Huntington Beach just finally introduced a recycling bin program that explicitly does not support plastic bags.
