Look: A Modern House and a 1930's Bungalow, Combined!
Austin

100708snap-02.jpg We came across an article in the Austin American-Statesman dubbing a residence here in East Austin as the “weirdest duplex in Austin”. We loved all the neat energy-saving ideas implemented in this design project and wanted to share this interesting combination of homes! More after the jump…

100708snap-01.jpg What do a modern, technologically filled house and a 1930’s bungalow have in common? For these two Austin homes, it’s the sun! The modern house in this equation is the UT student-designed Snap house, built for the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. The bungalow is the Harden House, a home relocated to its present location but original to the local neighborhood.

Together, both the houses are now beacons of energy efficiency and harness solar power to do all sorts of great things, like even heat water for showers. Without the modern homes amazing features, the bungalow would be gorgeous, but quite energy inefficient. You can read more about these two homes in the Austin American-Statesman article by Amber Novak.

What do you think about these two very different houses working together? Let us know!

Oh, Austin--how I love this city!

I'm not much for the look, but find the energy efficiency more important anyway.

That yellow kitchen, though... I'm afraid it's going to give somebody a mental breakdown. Yellow in small amounts is cheery, but too much yellow can make you nervous. Guess it depends on the owners.

That kitchen reminds me of Base Housing when my Dad was in the USAF...

If that kitchen had some light blue, I would love it

I'm with WP -- I love yellow and have most of my walls painted that color, but that kitchen is just Too Yellow for Words. A nervous breakdown is sure to come.

I'd take those floors in a heartbeat over my generic beige ceramic tile.
