apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look! Washer On Top of Toilet
"Washup" by Sevin Coskun

032508washer_toilet.jpgIt's not uncommon to find a washer in a kitchen, but what about the bathroom? "The Washup" (which was featured on Unplggd last week) was designed by Sevin Coskun as an entry for Core 77's Greener Gadgets competition...

"The Washup, designed by Sevin Coskun, solves two problems at once. It makes use of the washing machine's waste water to flush the integrated toilet at the bottom, and also puts the washing machine up above the toilet itself, saving space in small apartments."

While we love the concept of using the wasted water from the washing machine for a toilet, we're just not sure how popular the idea of washing your clothes above a toilet would be. It would definitely further the notion to keep the toilet seat down! What do you guys think of this concept? (We believe this is merely a prototype)

Definitely check out some of the other creative concepts and ideas that were entered into the Greener Gadgets Competion at Core77.

it is really scary looking. although i can see the green and space saving benefits - i think more people would be interested in one you could place remotely from the toilet....

Cool in theory; probably not so much in practice. If they could come up with some safety catch that caused the lid to drop when you pulled open the door, that'd probably help a lot. You don't want your dirty laundry getting dirtier before it gets washed.

lorijo- not if the toilet seat/lid is down

While not the prettiest thing in the world, I love it too!

i would buy it. but not for the master bathroom (whenever i'll have one..) but for the "other" bathroom.
and yes, you just need to keep the seat down, although it is something that at my house is a MUST or else my cats woudl jump in the toilet.

and i love the idea of recycling the water.

No way I could do my business with Robowasher looking down on me!

That is a great idea! But what would it be like to use the toilet while the washer was on? Hopefully, you won't have an uneven load ... no pun intended!

this is stupid. toilets have more challenges than just keeping the lid down. the swirl of the flush sends up a mist of bowl water. and i had a man visit for one whole day and was aghast at the stains under the rim of my seat. i always drop clothes on removal from a washer.

plain stupid.

I think its really creative! I am sure it would be possible to mount the washer on the other side of the bathroom wall, in a closet possibly? So the plumbing is shared but the washer is not over the toilet. I for one would also want a look at the backflow prevention device, but over all great concept!

Pretty great idea, though the thing itself looks like a bit of a beast! But y'know, ideas have to start somewhere, and then they tend to grow, so perhaps this can be the beginning of some nice innovations in energy, space, and water efficiency! Also, I'd take even the ugliest of laundry machines if I could have one in my apartment....

Surprised no one had complained about the height of the washer -- although I like not having to bend down to lift wet clothes. But even more important, why would you want to have to reach over the toilet -- which keeps you back from the washer door by at least a foot-and-a-half. Ecologically smart -- but ergonomically insipid!

That is one scary looking contraption. Like Darth Vader had an affair with a toilet. Er.

I don't think it's too high- the photo appears to be taken from a low angle; I don't think the average-sized person would have a problem reaching it.

Now, hopefully the lid never breaks, or many, many socks would receive an unwelcome toilet water bath after their washing.

This is one of the most hideous contraptions I've ever seen. Not to mention the fact that I do NOT want to be looking at the washing machine every time I go into the bathroom. Definitely NOT a good idea.

Whatever the height, I am not leaning over the toilet to retrieve clean clothes. That's a Never. And where do you sit the laundry basket? On top of the toilet seat? That's another Never.
