My Grandma was an avid gardener and was committed to all the things we consider to be green today, but back the in the day were just smart gardening. She had a compost pile (and strict rules for what went into it) and always put out buckets to catch the rainwater. We saw this modern version of her technique at Dwell on Design:

Rainbarrel?

I saw these at Dwell on design....they were on the back of the Kithaus in the prefab section. Very cool since they have such a low profile. I've had a hard time trying to figure out a location for a rainbarrel. The narrow depth of these just might do the trick!

Such a sustainable idea. I recently heard of someone trying to do just this, and he came up against all kinds of regulations and limitations in Los Angeles around water rights. It was so prohibative that he decided to bag the whole idea. At my community gardens (run by the City of LA) however, we collect rain water and use it to off set the cost of watering...

the cost for individual HOG tanks has just decreased. Also, if you are able to buy more than 6 units, yopu can buy directly from the manufacturer at www.rainwaterhog.com at a much lower rate.
