Zerorez Non-Toxic Carpet Cleaning

zerorez2_10.jpg

You've likely heard of non-toxic dry cleaning for your clothes. But how about a soap-free cleaning solutions for household carpet, tile, upholstery, and air ducts that cleans without leaving fumes or a residue? The ZeroRez ZFR cleaning system forgoes traditional soap and chemical solutions for a high-alkaline patented solution that they call Empowered Water (an FDA approved sodium hydroxide based formula).

We're curious, since sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye, is a dangerous base that must be used with extreme caution. But the technology seems to be already widely used for water electrolysis in non-residential applications to disinfect, sanitize and clean surfaces and foods in a variety of fields. We can't find any local reviews, but all the national reviews seems positive, with notes about the process extracting years of soapy residue that reside inside traditionally treated carpets. We'd love to hear about any of our readers who've had experience with this service to verify or dispute the claims.

Non toxic? Have them drink a glass of their solution in front of you.

Non toxic, eco friendly, and green are all just new marketing buzz words. People hear them and they assume they are good.

You can actually clean carpet quite well with pure water. Water is the most common solvent around. The trick is to get the water hot enough so that the atoms are really moving fast enough to release the unwanted atoms.

You can get very good results using heated water and a rotary extraction unit.

This was the response I got back from ZeroRez after inquiring about the topic of toxicity:

"The technology used by Zerorez goes much further than just the sodium hydroxide. The patented ZEROREZ system works by being able to deliver a hot fluid rinse to the carpet that leaves no residues behind. This fluid is an excellent cleaner that completely evaporates leaving no dirt attracting soaps or residues behind. The fluid is delivered by the most powerful truck mount through a cleaning head that does not allow the fluid to over wet the carpet padding. This prevents mold and microbial growth from occurring due to the cleaning. This process has been rated the highest rating given by the carpet and rug institute for soil removal as well as passes all criteria for safe, warrantee cleaning that does not cause degradation of the fibers. Visit the carpet and rug institute at www.carpet-rug.org for more information on this program."

Hmm, that didn't really explain how non-toxic their formula really is unfortunately. More of a marketing soundbite.

I didn't believe the Zero Res hype either but I heard the carpet cleaning ads all the time when I lived in L.A. I recently moved to Minneapolis and wanted my carpets cleaned before I settled in, so I called ZeroRes. Everything turned out great! My carpets feel new and the cleaners (at least in Minneapolis) were very friendly. I pushed them a bit about the "non-toxic" magic water they use, and they did say that the FDA has tested the stuff and gave it a GRAS rating.

I am not a chemist, but their cleaning was great! When I closed on my new Minneapolis house I was told the carpets had just been shampooed but they looked terrible. I thought I would have to replace. Zero Res really works! Their MySpace page has a video that explains what they do: http://myspace.com/minneapoliscarpetcleaning

Hmm... not sure what jussipoika is referring to. I chose zerorez to clean my carpets and sofa because they ONLY use water. I was definitely impressed and would recommend them to anyone. If you're health conscious and care about the environment I'd say zerorez is a pretty great option.

i am an iicrc certified cleaner i have general knowledge on the construction and makeup of the different types of carpet you will find in a home i also have an understanding on the best ways to remove soild from those materials. I have recently been hired at Zero Res. At my interview i was skeptical on their methods which do stray outside the norm.. For me NO SOAP? was hard to believe once the owner explained the science behind thie philosiphy i was sold. This is a wonderful idea that i believe will actch on quickly. as for how safe this stuff is. The owner did ingest some of his solutiuon right in front of m and told me that one emplyee washed their hair with it daily also that another emplyee actually used this EMPOWERED WATER to cook with. WHY? i dont know, but i do believe it to be extremely safe!
