apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Designer Dissection: Venice Bedroom

02-17-venicebedroom3.jpgA while back I entered my bedroom in the fall colors contest, and many readers asked where I bought the items for my space. I figured since its bedroom month on Apartment Therapy, I would repost the bedroom pictures and let you know where I purchased all of the items for the space.

My inspiration for the room came from the boutique hotels I have stayed in LA and Palm Springs. I wanted to create a space that looked most like a hotel bedroom, so I could pretend I was on vacation (all the time).

My room is very small and I had to maximize the space as best as I could. I did not have any room for a dresser and needed storage for my TV and my clothes. I found a cabinet from Ikea (Magiker), which fit perfectly in the space but the only problem was that it only came in birch, I decided to paint it black, which I do not recommend since the paint can peal off easy. The doors actually came in black and I decided to customize the cabinet by adding white trim and stick one Lucite handles.

The small bench was another piece I custom made. I had my upholsterer create a cushion to the exact measurements of the corner and attached peg legs that I painted white from my local hardware store.

Rug:Ikea (in grey)

Cabinet: Ikea (purchased black doors – not sure if they sell them anymore.) Magiker Shelf; Magiker doors.

Hardware and trim for cabinet: Koontz hardware
Red bench: Custom made
Chandelier: Vintage

Paint color: Behr - Granite Grey (www.behr.com)

Bed sheets, hanging lamps and drapes; Ikea
(Hanging shades, Drapes)

Headboard: Custom
Vintage side tables: Ebay
Handles for side tables: Koontz hardware
Red Vases: Umbra (painted red)
Syroco wall clock and mirror: Vintage
Syroco Birds: Ebay

DITTO DITTO DITTO - one of my fav bedrooms posted on AT. If I ever go to LA for a visit I want to make a reservation to see it in person. (feel free to put up a velvet rope).

I would love to see one of these from Gary from Fremont! Max, could you make that happen? This is one of my favorite series on AT!

Do you have any more info on the paint chip color? "Granite Grey" isn't coming up on BEHR's site, and the folks at the 'Depot don't have it in their system.

Thanks!

I thought this bedroom was breathtakingly beautiful the first time I saw it. Still is. So nice to see it posted again.
Simple, elegant, warm, embracing and inexpensive too!
Thank you for sharing your creativity - much appreciated and admired.

Will you PLEASE show us the rest of your apartment. I would love to see how you decorated the living room, bath and kitchen. This is the style I'm going for in my new apt.

I definitely thought it was great before and I think it's great now. Where are the mirror over the bench and the chandelier from? Those are my two favorites but I didn't see where they were from.

You guys are the best!
Thank you all for the wonderful comments.

Katie- to be honest with you I dont remember where I found those pieces, I think it was actually craigslist.

As for showing the rest of my cottage - I will do so in the following months - waiting on a few peices to be delivered.

You can also see some photos posted on my site.

Hi - I noticed you mentioned that you don't reccomend painting the IKEA unit, because of the problem with peeling. I'm struggling with this myself- one of their wardrobes would be perfect for my entry, but I really don't like any of the colors/finishes they offer. Anyone have reccommendations on how to effectively paint their melamine surfaces?
