apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Priscilla Woolworth's "At the Villa"
Guest Post from Danny Seo

Name: Priscilla Woolworth's "At the Villa"
Location: The Valley (Los Angeles)
Size: 3,000 square feet
Who else lives here? 2 teenage daughters Arielle and Lucie, and Leroy, a French bulldog

One of the frustrating parts of declining pages at shelter magazines is that beautiful, never-shot homes I find for them won’t get photographed because there simply isn’t any room inside the magazine (or, sigh, the magazine has folded). One set of scouting shots that have been sitting on my desktop for weeks is that of Priscilla Woolworth’s Los Angeles Spanish-style home...

It’s a Bohemian-style, very colorful, eclectic home that I immediately fell in love with and felt the bursts of color would definitely pop inside the pages of magazine. And, if her last name sounds familiar, it should: she’s the granddaughter of the founder of the Woolworth five and dime stores.

In addition to scouting her home for a magazine, I was told Priscilla was launching priscillawoolworth.com, an e-commerce site selling hand-selected fair-trade, eco-friendly and sustainable products and she appropriately calls “your eco-friendly general store.” Some of my favorite products include a teapot covered in intricately handwoven recycled telephone wire ($85; made in Vietnam) and a Kouji Iwasaki designed energy efficient bedside clock featuring LED technology embedded inside a minimal wooden block.

Part of the decorating elements in Priscilla’s house that attracted me first is that the whole house feels curated and collected, not professionally decorated. I tend to gravitate towards home that I call a “softer” Anthropologie, one that has beautifully displayed collections, slightly tattered and worn pieces of furniture, lush gardens, handmade DIY ideas and unexpected areas where we could set-up, for example, a candlelit dinner.  A bowl of seaglass isn’t poured from a plastic bag from Pottery Barn; they are individual pieces hand-collected on a family Oceanside excursion. This home feels, well, real.

The backyard garden with pool is a definite highlight of Priscilla’s house, with white-washed Adirondack chairs with overstuffed cushions in Mexican-inspired hues of orange, pink and blue. It just screamed, “sit back, have some Lemonade in a recycled glass tumbler, and relax.”

Inside the house, there are pieces of artwork, accessories and treasures that have a global feel without screaming Pier 1 or Ikea. It feels like a carefully orchestrated styling that mixes high-end finds from trips around the world with thrift store scores from local shops. The home, it feels, tells the story of Priscilla and her e-commerce venture style and tastes.

Even though I won’t have the pleasure of styling/producing a magazine story on her home, there is a bit of immediate gratification sharing it here.  Enjoy!  -Danny Seo

i love the dining room's mixed matched chairs (especially the blue one) paired with a more formal framed painting. i wish there was a close up of the curtain that she uses to separate the kitchen and the dining room, though. i like how casual, and minimal it is without feeling like a clumsy afterthought.

leroy's pretty cute, too...

I wish I could convince my suburbanite son to get rid of the matching patio set and go with something more homey and earthy. Maybe the picture of that lovely giant table will sway him.

This is just absolutely beautiful! Colorful yet calm. Delicious colors. Please tell me about the beautiful red glass candelabra and candlesticks! Are these old or new?
