Here's the scoop. I went to Target in Culver City yesterday and found lots of great stuff. I found wonderful suede-like scrapbooks, Blenko looking vases, vintage looking canisters, and an assortment of every color bolster pillow you can image.
Of course, I had to hit the Thomas O'Brien shelves but - to my amazement - they were almost bare. It looked like people had just cleared the shelves. Then I went around the corner and found two full isles full of his stuff on sale: everything from lamps to clocks to baskets. My favorite O'Brien items were the pair of side tables and the teal lamps.

Love the bedside tables--how's the quality? Relatively sturdy or completely rickety? I hate buying a "bargain" and then having it fall apart after less than a year (I'm looking at you, Ikea).
the bedside tables look great from afar, but the quality isn't super great. easily scratched. i think i read somewhere on this site about how they actually spray the stains on, as opposed to the traditional methods- that's how they get the prices so cheap- but they can be good if you don't really touch them..
I took a trip out to the Target in Queens last month and they had some really beautiful silk throw pillows. I was surprised at just how nice they were at $20. The inserts were down filled and had hidden zippers. A couple of years ago I bought a nice silk, down filled pillow only to realize later that there was no insert - the feathers were blown right into the pillow. I was always getting the tips of feathers sticking thru. So I was happy to see Target's were actual down inserts. And the fabrics are beautiful.
I love that blue O'Brien clock. I don't remember seeing that one. Maybe it's only on the left coast. I'll have to do another search here.
So - who knew that you could find this stuff at Target? The thing is that you have to look out for this stuff and pay attention. I was just at Target and missed most of these things. Needless to say, I'm going back tomorrow! Turquoise strikes again...
I got a great set of Woolrich flannel sheets there this weekend for $15. Great steal and they're SO soft. Perfect for the cold weather lately
Why would anyone waste their hard earned money to buy a mid-century modern reproduction when there are still plenty of the real things around? The modern vintage line at Target looks good from the pictures, and a sideboard at $399 is not really a bargain or a great retro look alternative. I bought a very good quality 1950s' Danish solid rosewood dining set with a matching sideboard and hutch for $350 at a local thrift store in the Valley and it is as vintage and modern as it can be. Find and re-use the best old stuff you can afford and most of the good old stuff were built the old school way, manufacturers buying lands with plenty of mature trees to cut down. It is not a coincidence or randomly selected that Grand Rapids, North Carolina and Central MA became a well known source of high quality and well made furniture, these is where the good woods came from.
