MiYO Vinyl Floor tiles

09_17_miyosmall.jpgOur bathroom and kitchen vinyl floors look like Edward James Olmos' face on a dirty day We've considered painting over the worn, perpetually stained looking floor with floor paint, in the hopes of disguising some of the wear and tear. And we've also used FLOR carpet tiles, but these were ruined by the elements of moisture from being placed in the kitchen or bathroom environment (not to mention our felines' propensity of using it for their potty spot). Affordable options are few, and who wants to put in 110% effort into a place you own 0% of?

Me oh MiYO! Like FLOR's carpet tiles, Armstrong's MiYO 16” vinyl floor tiles are mixable, matchable hard surface solutions for your bathroom, kitchen or other high traffic locations in the home. They come in a wide array of solid and patterned styles, and use a grid lining installation system that supposedly makes the process a cinch for do-it-yourself'ers; the system uses a "grid liner", which prevents the adhered tiles from touching the original flooring itself, so removal is simple. And for $7.12 per tile, this non-permanent flooring seems like a no-brainer solution for renters and owners alike. Thanks to Armstrong, I think our bathroom and kitchen floors will look less Edward James Olmos and more Scarlett Johansson soon.

Beautiful. You will have to let us know how installation goes.

HI we moved into an apartment with the same problem in Boston about 7 years ago. While in NY I visited industrial plastic on Canal. we bought large sheets of corrugated plastic in white (4x8). THe type of stuff that looks like corrugated cardboard and is sometimes used for portfolios etc. We expected it to last 6 months but it made it the 3yrs we were there. Plus we were able to cut to size with craft knife and lay with carpet tape. It did sustain some dings if something sharp dropped but still better than grubby floor. Easy to clean and a bit insulating. I am sure you could get it in different colors and cut and create designs. We had it shipped for not too much.

you go!

Just wanted to add that when I was renting I had the same problem. It's because the cleaners marketed to shine up linoleum attract mondo dirt. It's a total vicious cycle. The solution that worked for me was to go to Smart and Final, buy a big thing of pure amonia and a squirt bottle, slightly dilute, and then get on my hands and knees and scrub. This strips the tiles of the many layers of cleaner and dirt. Then only wash with water and maybe some soap. This helped a lot for me.

one brand name for the corrugated plastic is coroplast. what a great idea!

does anyone know of a plastics manufacturer or store in los angeles that might sell individual sheets of the stuff?

If your cats like to occasionally pee in the spot you're going to use these in, won't the pee go in between the tiles?

Just sayin'.

Mat: I think they like to pee on the FLOR tiles because the tracked litter gets embedded into the carpet surface and the scent remains even after using an enzyme and/or handwashing. A hard surface is much easier to clean and remove odours from...or so I hope!

I know that these are a lot cuter than your average vinyl floor tiles that you can buy at Home Depot, but why are they so much more expensive? Am I missing something?

These tiles cost $7 while the other ones only cost about $1. Besides the fact that they are super cute, is there anything special about them?

MichelleNCheese: I actually did our diningroom-turned-bedroom with the $1 Home Depot tiles you mentioned and I'm relatively happy with the result. But I believe besides the better selection of colours and patterns than the Home Depot vinyl tiles, the Armstrong MiYO tiles are easily removed/repositioned. Also I suspect they'll be of better quality, but I won't know until my sample tiles arrive to compare. Personally, I'm willing to pay the difference for the design improvement alone, since 99% of the Home Depot vinyl selection didn't tickle my fancy (I went for the plain, pure white tiles).

Have you tried using food to coax your cats to use their box? It's hard when you have more than one kitty, but when my cat broke litter training years ago I simply stopped feeding him 'till he used his box. Cured that problem in about a day - kitty loved his chow.

Are they having pain due to urinary issues? A stone or other blockage can also prompt a cat to break litter training - they come to associate the pain with the box.

Sunspot: The problem actually began when I switched from being a freelancer at home to going to an office job. I think my lil' boy Eames got upset that I wasn't around anymore, and began peeing outside of both litter boxes. It's a behavioural problem, and he's not one to be coaxed with food. Haha, I think he just misses his pops.

Hi Just Me,
I've outfitted my 2nd bedroom in corrugated plastic, $15 Cdn for 4x8 sheet, used 3 sheets to do the room, would have cost over $400 to do it in carpet. The reason is my cute little bunny likes to dig holes in the carpet, he's a digger, this way when I hear him digging it's music to my ears. By the way I seamed up the sheets with see through duct tape and it looks great. I did try the slightly opaque sheets as well but you can see the marks much easier, white is still the better choice as I have my computer in that room, the marks from the chair does not show up as much on the white.

FYI, Miyo is no longer sold online. Their website says to go to the parent Armstrong site, which sends users back to the Miyo site in a useless loop.
