Weather: The Effect of the Outdoors on the Indoors

061909-indooroutdoor.jpgYesterday, we were speaking with a friend in New York where it's been raining so much the local news station has nicknamed the city "Seattle on the Hudson." Here in LA, Gregory, along with the rest of us, have been frustrated by the June Gloom in our normally sunny environs. When the weather is perfect, as the weather in LA admittedly normally, we ignore it, but when it's not or when it's different, it changes the way we think about the inside of our homes as well as the outside...

When it rains or the weather's chilly and gloomy, we hunker down in the living room. We don't want to go out so we persuade friends to come over promising hearty pasta, a couple of good movies or we throw together a game night. We start thinking about rugs and throws and how to cozy up our home. Sunny weather, especially after a few days of rain or gloom, has us throwing open the windows, waking up full of energy, raring to get our home projects going. A clean fresh breeze blowing through the house, we want to clear out the house of clutter, roll up the rugs, take away the knick knacks, bring in flowers and plants, crack open a bottle of white wine & invite friends over for a barbeque. What about you? How does weather influence your relationship with your home?

"Seattle on the Hudson"... that's funny, as it's been lovely here in Seattle (well, with the exception of this morning!).

same or very similar to some from urban outfitters, I think.
I picked some up @ a local thrift store--new but slightly
unravelling.

I'm either fixating on windows of time when I have 24 hrs. of dry weather so I can apply Scotts...or no rain long enough for the grass to dry enough so that I can cut it w/my electric mower & not get electrocuted...this has become my obsession. This is definitely the most unusual, coldest June here in the Northeast in my memory...but doesn't everything look wonderful when the rain finally stops...and everyone comes out.

And it's been raining on the East Side for the past few days. Go figure.

What a neat question! I never thought about it before now, but now I realize that in any kind of cloudy weather, I'm usually in the kitchen - it gets the most light. Sometimes I cook or bake, or sometimes I just sit and read.

When the weather is partly cloudy, I hate using my computer or trying to read in our living room, because the constant dimming and brightening (as the clouds pass over the sun) irritates me.

Also, when it's brightly sunny in the morning (like today!) I always do laundry and hang it outside to dry in the sunshine!

I would have to say our apartment feels much more open when the weather is nice since I'm tempted to at least open the blinds if not roll them up to let in sunshine. If it's raining, snowing, etc then the blinds are down and even at times closed - so the place feels more cramped than it is.

I grew up in gloomy weather, and cannot staaaaaaand it, so the weather here (NYC) has been driving me crazy. When it's like this I try to do art projects, or deep cleaning or something rewarding that keeps me busy and my mind off the grayness. Also, I turn on all the lights.

I don't understand the frustration. June Gloom is a seasonal variant, and it happens every year, in more or less the same pattern. Just like rainy El Nino winters. Are people surprised by this and if so, why?

LA will be hot enough come August, so why not enjoy this weather for what it is?

I'm a native Of Southern California and I haven't nor do I ever plan on embracing June gloom. It's like t*ts on a bull: useless.
