Only a few days after our own, Los Angeles is having a birthday though, at 227, it's considerably older than us. Blame it on its relative youth, but Los Angeles is not a sentimental city. Like the movie business for which it's well-known (though the aerospace industry apparently employs more people), it's a city that won't hesitate for a nanosecond before going in for a face lift...
We've lost some of our favorite buildings (Israeli Discount Bank, anyone?); in our neighborhood alone, four buildings have been razed to make way for luxury condominiums, and others are within a hair's breath of the wrecking ball. While we love our adopted city, we sometimes wish it had just the tiniest bit of hesitation before going under the bulldozer. Read the full lecture the city gets in today's LA Times. What about you? What do you love about LA? What drives you crazy? What do you wish for LA in the future?

What I love most about LA? People from all around the world move here to try to catch their big break, and at the same time, they add their talents and ideas into the mix. Just like the waiter at the restaurant down the street with stars in her eyes, many of us come here to make it big one day. This is a city of dreamers.
The palm trees (which aren't native to the region btw) and the weather is just an added bonus ;)
What drives me crazy? The 405 during rush hour
The Future? LA just needs to keep doing what it's doing. People love to hate LA, but I just think that it's built on stereotypes and perception. You'll figure out sooner or later that living here is NOT like an episode of the "The Hills"...
Happy Birthday Los Angeles!

I love how friendly everyone is in Los Angeles. And the fog floating through palm trees in early morning fall, and the neon pink and dusky orange sunsets on a field of electric blue, and sitting in my living room window on a summer night watching film crews below me in the street wander around, and walking to the grocery store the day after Christmas in shorts and a tshirt, and catching a glimpse of the Hollywood sign as the bus cruises down Wilshire in afternoon traffic.
People putting down Los Angeles drive me crazy. Especially when they live in a truly horrible place and refuse to admit it.
For the future, the expanding public transit systems moving faster would be great. I really can't say I have any ideas for improvements! I'm a total fangirl as is.
Happy Birthday LA!

Sapo verde los angeles. The only thing I dislike about LA are the people who are working so hard to change it's neighborhood into mini Stepford suburbs. It's great that you come into run down neighborhoods and do what you can to beautify them and make them safe... but you can't sacrifice a neighborhood's soul for the sake of your property value.

Although Atlanta is now my home, I'm a California native and lived in LA for 5 years. I love the individual characteristics of the various neighborhoods...from Los Feliz and Silver Lake to Westwood and Santa Monica...you still have the steady energy (excitement, disdain, success, failure) of LA but it shifts from one area to another.
Some of my favorite places I spent my time were:
- The Getty Center (love the gardens)
- Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood (the best place to see a movie anywhere!)
- Santa Monica Farmer's Market at the Pier
- The numerous hole-in-the-wall restaurants, diners and stands that you can only recall when you pass by them that offer the authentic, cheap and delicious fares of Thai, Japanese, and Mexican cuisine - in my opinion the most reliable and comforting history of LA, and maybe California in general.
