I dont know why, but Ive never been a fan of the iconic black and yellow sunflower. I do love graphic botanicals like daisies and calla lilies, but the high contrast sunflower must bring to my mind Holly Hobby bric-a-brac or those Anne Geddes babies-in-pots.
So it is a thrill to remember another kind of sunflower, found this weekend at Hollyworld Flowers in the Hollywood Hills. Not only are the yellow and green centers unexpectedly sophisticated, but at five flowers for $8.98, you can fill a room or two quite inexpensively.
And if youre looking for more pop, the yellow and black version is also available.
NINE DOLLARS FOR FIVE FLOWERS? That's nuts.
You can go to any TJ's and do better. Or even better, get up nice and early, drive downtown, and go to the FlowerMart with a friend's resale number.
I don't care what the website claims, this isn't a discount price.
I have always been intrigued by that Hollyworld place, because it looks like a hot dog stand/drive-thru. Location, location, location says they must have some nifty things in order to survive.
I don't want to dis the above post, but aren't we also talking about quality? You want sophisticated, you get five flowers for $8.98. You want pedestrian, cheap, and less than fresh, yes, go to Trader Joe's.
As a single guy I always think I have a certain arrangement in mind when I go into a flower store, based on my limited knowledge. Most flower stores answer my expectations, but Hollyworld almost always has something more interesting that I hadn't considered.
Also there's always the heart-pounding thrill of trying to get into and out of Barham traffic to park in their sleeply inclined parking spots.
