Since there is so much MDF, veneered, or "disposable" furniture in the market, it's so refreshing when you come across a piece that is made of actual solid wood. De La Espada is a company that has been around for over 10 years. Their factory is just outside of Madrid, and they opened their first flagship store in London, in 1996. With another store in New York, they have now decided to open another one and lucky for us Angelenos, they chose to locate it in West Hollywood. De La Espada likes to describe their designs as "warm modernism", and we think that's the perfect description. The pieces are all simple and clean-lined. The warmth of the wood makes it inviting and timeless, and the quality of the craftsmanship gives them a feeling of tradition.

They use only premium grade black walnut and white oak from sustainable forests in the US. The pricing is obviously not going to be like IKEA, but if you are looking at investing in a quality product that will last for generations, De La Espada is definitely worth a visit. Check out their new showroom (located on Melrose at La Cienega) or visit the website to see their extensive collection, as well as current pricing.

"The pricing is obviously not going to be like IKEA"

How very true. Their stuff IS beautiful, but that's what I'd expect for eleventy million dollars.

Well if I had the budget, I'd definitely consider De La Espada. I've loved their line for a while now; and walnut is one of my favorite woods.

I second that. Beautiful, but isn't there beautiful and affordable?

The prices are outrageous! Even for solid wood.

Don't forget that de la espada also was a force behind the Atlantico line of furniture that got a lot of AT press a little over a year ago. The Atlantico line is about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the de la espada pieces. I haven't been to the LA showroom, so I don't know if they have any of the Atlantico on display, but I saw one of the beds in the Soho showroom and was really impressed. I found the pictures really didn't do it justice. More impressive for me, however, is that a high end contemporary brand is reaching out to people with a budget of $1600 for a bed instead of $5500. Now, if only we could get B&B Italia, Minotti, Ligne Roset, Meridiani, Poliform and others to make the same effort...

Furniture is beautiful.. I saw it when I was in New York City and plan to visit the new store in LA when I'm ready to redo my house on the beach. Furniture is expensive, but the quality is second to none and love the modern clean lines. You get what you pay for and I look forward to my new purchase.

You can find a professional woodworker and have solid wood furniture custom made for the price of De La Espada's stuff. Thhat also gives you a lot more control over the design/size/materials.

De La Espada also does customized pieces for the same length of time as their standard pieces, they will make any size...
