Dwell on Design: Westside Home Tours, Part 2

070209-wscr01.jpgAs we noted yesterday, Sunday we were again up bright and early, this time checking out Dwell's home tours on the Westside of Los Angeles. The last two homes we saw on the tour (we only got to see 5 out of 6 due to our clutch issues) were located on opposite sides of Coldwater Canyon in the hills of Beverly Hills and they were definitely not for the shy...

Dwell on Design: Westside Home Tours, Part 1

070109-Dwellondes_small.jpgAfter Saturday's feast, we thought that we'd couldn't be anymore blown away. Well, we were wrong. After chilaquiles at our go-to Sunday breakfast spot in the Farmer's Market, we zipped on down to Venice to begin the day with a tour of the first house of the five we were able to see. In the battle of the west side v the east side, we were hard pressed to find a winner...

Dwell on Design: Eastside Home Tours, Part 2

063009esbh07.jpgYesterday we shared our photos of three of the house tours we checked out on Saturday on LA's east side. Today, we're sharing the other two homes we saw on the east side, including the Baxter Home which was memorable not only because of the house itself but because we destroyed our car's clutch trying to find it...

Dwell on Design: Eastside Home Tours, Part 1

62909dwelltours000.jpg How was your weekend? We spent ours checking out the Dwell on Design house tours. Saturday, we drove around the east side, checking out homes some of which were in neighborhoods we were completely unfamiliar with (Glassell Park) and others that were in neighborhoods we knew well but never would've guessed that they hid breathtaking modern homes within their depths. Although there were 6 tours to see on Saturday, we only made it to 5...

To put it mildly, we were stoked when Jeremy accepted our request to coordinate an Apartment Therapy House Tour of his downtown LA loft. First of all--his pad is located at the historic Eastern Columbia Building, an art deco masterpiece. Not to mention, Jeremy himself is an individual of notoriety directing the remake of the cult classic, The Wizard of Gore. So you can imagine our curiosity and interest in what Mr. Kasten had up his sleeve in the decor department. To find out, we brought along our generous neighbor (and amazing photographer) Jason Redmond to help out with our evening shoot...

tour2009.jpgWhen David and Kurt first sent us photos of their San Diego home, we were in awe. Yes, they have access to the best of vintage mid-century modern furniture (David owns Boomerang for Modern); but they've made their home more than just a showroom of iconic pieces: It's so comfortable, inviting, and warm. In David's own words: "After 10 years here, I got to say it works wonderfully as we can’t think of another place we’d rather live."

We have to admit, when we walked into Dave and Shyla's downtown pad, we felt like we were walking onto the set of "BIG". The huge loft is a mixture of eclectic fun (and like their friends claim--we could have stayed all day looking at everything). We first noticed the huge mirror that runs the expanse of the left side of the loft with a giant neon "S" reflecting back at us. And just above our heads hanging from a railing is a Cal Oaks vintage neon sign from Pasadena. Wandering into the center of the loft, a pair of purple velvet fun house couches make the living area feel cozy while staying true to the offbeat vibe. With a loft this big, we love how Dave and Shyla managed to create cozy areas to retreat to after a long day of work.

House Tour: Greg's Reflection of Taste
Los Angeles

Size: 1750 sq ft.
Years lived in: 3.5 years

We think if we reviewed all our ATLA house tours, the name "Greg" would end up being the most common name of participants. What can we say, we're a stylish bunch. And today we can add Greg Holcomb's 2 bedroom, 2 bath 1920's era apartment to the list of "Greg's" and "Gregory's" showcased. Greg's space is an example of how to buck the MidCentury or "loft look" for something a bit more eclectic and classical, his home defined by his love of foreign films, art, and a dedication for the finer things in life on an eBay budget (we especially like that Greg's mom made the window treatments). And get ready to be jealous of Greg's expansive city view below...we know we are!

Like a Bollywood spectacle, today's house tour is an ode to all things colourful, a Mumbai residence with spaces that radiate the creative personality of its occupants through the glowing spectrum of paints, the texture of decorative details and an apparent love for the handmade evident in each of the rooms. Stark minimalism this is not. Ashwiny's home is a reminder that a home is indeed where our heart is, and her heart is manifested in the various artistic, hand painted furnishings and personal art that grace her home in captivating style...

Owners Jora and Bryan remodeled a hillside home into their MidCentury-style dream home with an evident focus upon its greatest asset: the unbelievable view. The house is quite a showcase, filled with a tasteful assortment of thoughtfully chosen furnishings and an open-space floor plan that extends out into their expansive backyard where surprises like a hanging hillside deck, organic garden and even a chicken coop take advantage of their property expanse. We're wholeheartedly envious, but we're glad to be able to share a peek inside such a showcase home...

When our friend Jeremy mentioned that his best friend Sara would be interested in opening up her home for an AT house tour--we were stoked. Not only do Jeremy's friends have good taste, we've been a huge Sara Lov fan for a while (not to mention her other band, the Devics). So last Monday afternoon, we stopped by Sara's place to take some pics of her charming pad. Not only does she have great taste--she's an organizer at heart (we can definitely relate). She's also a DIY'er--designing her own coffee table and recovering her vintage couch. Lots more pictures and Sara's before and after outdoor oasis after the jump.

We've always held onto the dream of calling a loft space home sweet home. The high ceilings, the open floor space plans, the industrial details and often unique indoor/outdoor elements that define loft living as a blank canvas for ideas. The premise has always remained a temptation for someone who likes to rearrange and redecorate at a whim like ourselves. Justin and Joshua are living that dream. Their LA loft a perfect example of customizing a space with colour and creativity, all with budget resources from the likes of Craigslist, the "oops" section at Home Depot, and thrift stores. Most notable is their solution for living within a space without windows with an outdoor view; a hand painted mural playfully fills in from floor up, giving the couple a place to enjoy the "outdoors" on their own couch...a space we'd imagine from the mind of someone like Michel Gondry! Take a peek below...

Do what we do long enough and one begins to appreciate seeing smart ideas from unexpected places. Although we regularly receive house tour submissions from larger cities like our own, San Diego, Phoenix, Austin and other design-centric regions, we're always ecstatic about seeing a home from smaller, yet vibrant areas outside the usual suspects. Such is the case with Susy and Dale's small footprint Reno studio, which we think is a perfect example of "real people" decor with creative and efficient design planning (loft bed, a perfectly organized kitchen, etc), illustrating many of the concepts we promote here on our site, but with furnishings and decorative items that forgo the design store/catalog aesthetic for recognizably comforting, down-to-earth and inviting decor...all words that befit Susy and Dale's space.

House Tour: Steve’s Mancave
Sydney

Name: Steve
Location: Sydney, Australia
Size: 650 sf (including mezzanines)
Years lived in: Rented for 6 years, owned 6 month

>> Enter Slideshow

Normally we write a short blurb about our own impressions of a home we've been invited to house tour. But considering Steve resides thousands miles away and has also been so kind to provide a summary of his own, we're going to let Steve tell you all about his unique "man cave":

Steve, a reclusive failed novelist, rented his warehouse apartment in Sydney’s inner city suburb of Surry Hills for five years before buying it six months ago. His previous house was an ultra-modern architect designed abode. It was too light, bright and guest-friendly for Steve but he liked the openness. So after he purchased his new old apartment, he knew exactly what he wanted to do - knock out all the walls, paint it as dark as possible, and retreat into it at the end of the day like a cranky bear. Architecturally, one could say that many of the finishes were left raw to reveal the underlying structures and beams, but in truth it was just too hard to reach them...
