3 Easy Organizing Tips

082508ikea-07.jpgWe already mentioned that we traveled to the IKEA Home and Garden Show last week in Anaheim. What we didn't tell you is how much we loved the IKEA Dream Home. It was an organizer's dream. There was a place for everything and everything was in its place. Here are 3 easy organizing techniques we picked up that you can apply at home. Learn more after the jump.

  • First, use the back of a door or an entry way into a space to hang items. Always be on the lookout for underutilized spaces to hang clothing or other household items. The inside of a closet door is always a safe bet for scarves, belts or ties.

  • Secondly, we love using boxes, decorative baskets, and hidden storage spaces to corral blankets, books, or DVDs. The great thing about baskets is their portability making them also great for projects that travel from room to room. We love keeping a decorative basket in each room of our apartment for items that need to go back to their original home. When the basket is full, just grab it and distribute its contents to their appropriate homes.

  • Last but definitely not least is our favorite organizing tip--go vertical. In this first picture, going vertical allows the homeowner to display their entire collection of pictures while giving the room a feeling of grandeur. Hanging the curtains from the ceiling to the floor also makes the space seem larger. In the adjacent picture, the shoes are being hung with a vertical shoe organizer. This example saves closet floor space and makes the shoes much more accessible.

my favorite thing about IKEA's rooms/homes is that they actually look like someone lives in them! there is stuff! i also love how they incorporate kids stuff into a room (like the kitchen or living room) without it looking like a kid's room.

That's a great bedroom - at first glance, it doens't look like IKEA.

I've always liked the way Ikea puts together a room, I wish I could have walked the house too!

I lust over the glass-front corner-encompassing closet they've created in the store.

I just bought an ottoman with storage inside for $25 from craigslist. I love it. It helped me store away a comforter and extra decorations that were still sitting in a moving box due to the lack of space in my new place.

I also love the idea of going vertical. I have a similar shoe organizer at home. A tip for those who lack closet space -- the shoe organizer works great for rolled up towels or sheets.

This isn't very creative, but I have an under-bed bin for sweaters, and off-season clothes.

I have the same Ikea ottoman in brown and use it to store my photo albums. It's great!

My storage ottomans reside in the dining room. Nobody would ever guess that they're file storage.
