I hate this piece they way it is, but I could see Turquoise staining this glossy black and adding a mirror to the top.

I think it could be redone to look really cool.
For example, I'd tear off the dated base and attach a cool brushed steel base. Then I'd restain it an espresso color. I might add something to the sides, like thin brushed steel sheets placed behind the decorate wood panels. Or, perhaps you could place something semitransparent behind the wood panels and place a light inside to create a cool glow in the room.
