Its the shade, and the color of the lamp that detracts from its potential. The shade has a horrid border on it - in needs to be absolutely flat. The shape of the shade is atrocious. It needs to be cylindrical. It is not. I would also suggest a different color for the base. Murky green would make most things look poor.

I do not like these, but I appreciate the designer thinking outside the box

c16621 has a good point: make the same lamp from "high end" materials, and I think you'd be getting a different response.
What we're seeing reeks of stale cigarettes belonging to a man in a ripped wife-beater in a flophouse in film noir L.A. -- but you could do a Beverly Hills version.
But, what is the point? Is the designer saying anything here? Are they supposed to be detailed replicas of salvaged items from a fire? Is this what happens when you use too much wattage?
On 3rd look, they do remind me of poblano peppers...

I think the problem is that the shape evokes two ideas for me - depression and decay. I don't want either of those feelings in my apartment.
What a wonderful exploration and transformation of a recycled material. There are endless possibilities!!! Is everyone else really taking a closer look at these?
