Hot or Not? Oooms Road Kill Carpet

101508roadkillrug01.jpgAs an animal lover, I'm sort of repulsed by the notion of having a rug displaying a cartoonish representation of roadkill, but admittedly interested in such a polarizing and in your face piece that sets itself apart from "tasteful" display. The idea of politicized home decor is an interesting trend during these highly politicized times (some of you might remember the Global Warming Rug by NEL for Nanimarquina), and I suspect that reactions to this sort of graphic decor statement will mostly register negative. But then again, like most artistic or political endevours, evoking a response is often the goal. Check out the detailed close up of the rug underneath the jump and vote below...

101508roadkillrug02.jpgThe Oooms Road Kill Carpet is described as such:

Do you know the feeling that you do not want to take a look at something, but you still do? The Road Kill carpet is a continues struggle between attraction and repulsion. It’s a warm, soft, cuddly carpet that attracts you to take a nap on it. But at the same time its a repulsive image of a car-flattened, bloody fox.

Tell us what you think.

Dear me. No, it would bother me way too much to use it at my place. However, I would like to send one to Sarah Palin.

I will say this much for it. It's a very convincing rendering.

Yeah, reminded me of dear departed kitty, who escaped out of a window he pushed open not long after I moved, and got run over by a car. Not exactly something that brings pleasure into life.

There are a heck of a lot more constructive ways to go about reducing traffic (I'm assuming that's the "statement"?), such as promoting public transportation, for instance. Those of us who have lost family (one), friends (four so far), and beloved pets to oncoming cars don't need to be reminded of its gruesomeness.

What was it that someone famous said about not allowing anything in your home that is neither beautiful nor useful?

I want to come into my home and feel comforted - not repulsed

This reminds me of one morning after strong Santa Ana winds when I found a squirrel that had been blown out of a tree, still clinging to the branch. It was pretty sad. Not cool at all.

This makes me want to barf a little. Call me crazy, but I look away from roadkill without having to force myself too.

Coincidentally, I came home last Friday to find a dead mouse lying on my dark gray shag run in the dining room. I have no idea how it died or why there, but seeing it on my favorite rug just broke my heart. Who would want to simulate death on your rug???

Wouldn't wan't this at home, but think the idea is funny.

once again, the threshold between design/decoration and contemporary art, between the home and the art gallery is questioned.
I'd like to know more about the creator's actual intention : is it a statement, or just a poke at bad taste in decor? If it's made just to please those titillated by bad taste (like many things these days) and as interior decor then artistically it's dubious. If it is an artwork for gallery space, and a political statement, then why not.

and yet recycled here to look like an original AT thought? hmmm....i'm thinking this is not a coincidence!!! at least credit him/her!

Pretty clever!

It's sort of like a cartoon come to life--a dead cartoon but real...if you know what I mean.

Definitely requires a sense of humor. I wonder who will buy it?

So what's next? A Hot or Not survey on the sick freak who tied a stray dog up as an art display in his gallery then starved it to death while people watched?? oh wait....he's not a sick freak..hes an 'artist' making a 'political statement', right?

and he wants to do it again...because it was supported by the sort of person who would call this rug 'art'.

OK, so the point made is about how the current trend in dead animal decor is as appalling as road kill. Not pretty. But an actual rug that is being sold somewhere?

I think it's hilarious, and would probably buy it if only it fit with my decor. I also think people need to lighten up and have a sense of humor.

I'm tired of this idea that anything that makes a political statement is automatically considered art. There should be higher standards for art than "I made it and I hope it will piss people off." And I'm appalled at the idea that this type of 'art' ought to be translated into home decor. It's the equivalent of inviting someone into your home and then yelling at them for an hour about how bad X politician is.

While the shock factor makes me smile, I feel more sad than anything when I see a dead animal by the side of the road - especially a domestic animal that most often was allowed to run loose. My sympathies go out to the people whose animals are normally responsibly controlled and were the victims of bad luck. However, I believe that most domestic animal road deaths resulted from people carelessly allowing their dog/cat to run loose until fate intervenes.

The only thing I do like about it is that the creator obviously tried to step out of the box, as they say.
