Hot or Not? Tree Stump Table from West Elm

020508_westelm.jpg

I think we'd all like a little repose in our own little cabin. But what say you, would this side table make the trip?

I saw this last night in the West Elm store. Looks cute in the catalog photo, but in person... not so much. It's extremely glossy.

My "not hot" vote stems from my suburban, 1970's upbringing. Everyone who was anyone on my street had a tree stump in their yard that they painted white and fashioned into a planter, a table or tacked house numbers to. Tree stumps can be hot, faux bois can be hot, faux tree stumps painted to look like suburban mailbox holders are definitely not hot.

Looks pretty glossy to me in the picture.

I do not know why we continue to drag West Elm out into the firing line.

Robyn, I agree. This table definitely reminds me of the part of the 1970's I'd rather forget.

I'm surprised that there are so many negative comments. Maybe it's because I didn't live through most of the 1970s, but this looks like a great textured addition to the otherwise-sleek bedroom of my dreams. Especially with West Elm's little snail decoration. (Which last is just a dream, because my cats would destroy it.)

I already have the branch floor lamp from West Elm ( http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/branch-floor-lamp-west-elm ) so I think that's enough of fake trees for my apartment.

Funny that people are saying it's too glossy in person. In that picture I don't like the bark of the stump because it looks too matte, but if it was glossy I'd like it.

I liked the table in person, and I'd love to see more colors. It's the snail that sends me back to the 70s. (The whole store almost did.) I lived them, and I'm glad they're over.

They also have a real cypress stump for $99 or so. I saw a vintage stump at the flea market on Sunday for $50 or so. I liked West Elm's better, probably because it is less orange than the older wood. I look forward to the answer on the knotty pine thread about the "orange-fication" of wood over time.

Love it, the floor lamps...really, all of it.
