Hot or Not? Tub or Shower in the Middle of a Room?

032609atlahotornot01.jpgA friend just commented upon seeing these images that the idea of a tub or shower in the middle of the room made him feel "uncomfortable", as he preferred the privacy and comfort of a corner placement, while we're envious of the idea. What do you think?

Corner. Not because of privacy but just b/c it seems like potential for more wet slippery floors and more to clean with it in the middle like that. But I definitely wouldn't want a big open shower in my bedroom like that.

My grandmother used to have this amazzzzing house, and she had among others, one huge bathroom that was mostly white, with a big red clawfoot tub smack in the middle. My sister and I called it the birthday tub and as a special treat would take a long bubble bath in it on our birthdays when we were growing up. It seemed like the ultimate luxury. I would love to be able to do that on a regular basis.

I do not like that shower in the middle of the bedroom at all, at all. How humid must that room get?

I wouldn't want it in the middle of my bedroom, necessarily, but if I had a huge bathroom, I'd love to have the tub in the middle!

I don't think these questions are mutually exclusive. For me, I love the idea of a tub in the middle of a room. But I hate the idea of a shower.

The tub looks like a gigantic cereal bowl.

I would LOVE a shower or a tub in the middle of the room. I have always been fascinated with the idea of showers in tubs in unusual places. Kind of gives your boring ol' bath a little exhibitionist thrill! :-)

Tub - yes. Shower - no.

I prefer my showers hot and steamy. It couldn't possibly get steamy enough in that great room. I'd also worry about the effects of the moisture on my bedding and furniture. Not to mention, especially with the shower, where do you place your shampoo and conditioner and soap and everything? Anything to hang it up would make it cluttered and destroy the purpose of the austere shower.

My feeling is that a shower or a bath in the bedroom are more for sexual interludes. Everyday showers and baths probably happen in a more normal bathroom. I think a shower in the bedroom could be sexy, just not for everyday becuase of steam and mold like people above stated. It could also make people think "bachelor" house.

"Freestanding" is one thing... marooned in the middle of an otherwise dry space is quite another. I love a shapely free standing tub, but I'd prefer that it stood freely in my bathroom.

I agree with others that a shower in the middle of a room seems a little 'off', but a beautiful tub might work. I think the main thing is that the bathroom has to be pretty big, since it doesn't seem to be the most efficient use of space to have such a large item in the middle of a small room.

I would love a large bathroom with a tub in the middle, and a shower set against a wall. Tubs today are so beautiful that they can be carried off on their own...showers not so much.

This strikes me as very Poconos-bridal-suite. And not in a good way.

my cousin had an apartment in the lower east side ( nyc) where the tub was in the middle of the living room...sure it was kinda odd..but the whole vibe of the building, and the era ( early 80s) ..i dunno it just fit in.

she made the best of it and ever since then i have longed for a tub in an odd spot.

PhillyLass: LOL! You're supposed to be lying on the bed and getting all hot and bothered knowing your bed-partner-to-be is wet and steamy behind that circular shower curtain. (I would bet that the toilet is not similarly located!)

I used to have a friend with one of those tenement apartments that had the tub in the kitchen and the toilet was out in the common hall (though the toilet was just for his apartment). The tub was hidden under a counter he built that swung on a pivot at one end to expose the tub when needed, He also rigged up an ingenious device that turned the light on in the toilet and unlocked the door to it, when you pulled on a cord that came through the wall in his kitchen near the apartment door. When you left the toilet and shut the door, the light automatically went out and the door relocked behind you. I think if he hadn't been gay, I would have married him!

it'd be nicer if the shower curtains are transparent. and there's a pole in the middle of it

Too Las Vegas for me. I like my tub and shower to be cozy, private, pragmatic. If I had the right setting, I might go for a big window over the tub (assuming a private view, maybe of my nice private beach -- HA!), but I like my tub enclosed on at least three sides.

I have never understood the concept of bathing in the bedroom. Too weird!
