Hollywood Hills Revival
Elle Decor

022608_brett5.jpgWhen you think of action and adventure, giant explosions, high speed car chases, a hollywood swagger and an ego to match, does that conjure up images of a classic and possibly even demure living room with rustic, down to earth accents and an overall solid old hollywood feel (without any unnecessary glitz or glamour)? Us either, that's why we were really surprised to see who's house this is:

This old spanish style Hollywood Hills home belongs to none other than director and producer (of films such as Rush Hour and 21) Brett Ratner.

The five-bedroom, stone-and-redwood relic known as Hilhaven Lodge had quite an amazing history long before Bret laid eyes on it. Built by Hoover Dam architect Gordon B. Kaufmann in 1927, it became Ingrid Bergman's home (she called it 'the Barn'), Kim Novack was wooed there by Director Richard Quine, James Caan rented it after that and most recently it was owned by Allan Carr, who produced the movie Grease. After that though the house fell into disrepair and it was Ratner himself who wanted to restore the home to its original splendor, getting in touch with the original architects and embarking on a major restoration.

I love old Hollywood style, before it morphed into Hollywood Regency.

Love both living rooms but the window seat white room and kitchen look like they belong in a different house not very cohesive in the sense of the architecture and interiors style of this house.

Seems weird that a man with such questionable sensibilities would have such a tasteful home. Of course he had someone design for him. Now all he needs is someone to make his movies for him. He'd be a man of refined taste and artistic vision.

Love this home with all of its conversational seating and rustic yet refined feel... whether he makes good movies or not, I think he has lovely taste in interior design.

Brett Ratner is a total hack and his house reflects someone with virtually nothing but a checkbook -- there's nothing personal or interesting in here - it looks like every other rich person's house in Hollywood. And I seriously doubt that anyone has cooked in that kitchen except a Mexican maid.

This house is lovely, I would love to know who designed it? It looks like a Gary Gibson house, but it doesn't say in the Elle decor article. Does anyone know?

I mean decorated it! It clearly wasn't Brett, Was it Gary Gibson, or another LA designer?

Yeah, this really doesn't fit with my impression of the owner.

The kitchen is kinda blah; when you have to display a pitcher of orange juice to spice things up, then you know you have too much white going on.
