Love this loft conversion project from Singapore where the architects utilized custom wall dividers with the multi-purpose use of stairways (very steep stairs), worktop areas and storage using affordable 12mm plywood, transforming a worn out post war interior into a modernist blank canvas (you'll have to imagine it furnished, as even the architects themselves joked: "I just realised that the photos do not have furniture in them. Guess we are just not cut out to be interior designers." A few photos below...

"As a result, all existing interior walls were demolished to make way for more light and space within its 1,200 sqft shell. The plan is primarily defined by a series of timber boxes arranged in a linear strip similar to bookshelves in a library. It occupies 2m of the entire 6m apartment width and is distributed along its entire length. This organized general programmatic zones and articulated spaces for various activities within the openness of the emptied plan."

That is such an amazing improvement. I really don't like the ceiling or floor in the before pictures, it's such a hospital look.

That hospital interior look is strangely common all throughout parts of Asia, even amongst well the upper middle class. I don't know how many times I visited similar looking apartments in Hong Kong and mainland China during visits. And don't get me started about the cold lighting to match the sterile interiors (to their credit, they were ahead of the CFL curve).

The Before photos are everything that's wrong with modern Asian interior design. The After photos are everything that's right. Kudos!

Hopefully the home owners show us their decorating savvy a few months down the line! They have a beautiful canvas to work with, very enviable!

hey, don't blame us Asians! Western imperialists taught us how to build houses back in the 40s-60s! that said... this really is a bad-looking and badly laid-out apartment - no windows in the main living area whatsoever!

wow...from chinese proletarian to clinical modernist!

my first impression is that the remodeling architects must be working for plywood suppliers...and they're doing a great job!

love the bathtub, though feel sorry for whover has to keep it clean...

nice to see something from a different corner of the world...

Many Singaporean / Malaysian interiors have white marble / tile floors, but hey, it's like 50 degrees outside and 90% humidity.

What an amazing transformation!

I wonder if those stair treads open up like little chests for storage inside?
