apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

House Call: Long Tall House
Tokyo

Name: Long Tall House/Space Space

Location: Tokyo, Japan

Type: 2 bedroom, 3 story residence

Size: 102.69 meters squared

Designed by Japanese architect firm, Space Space, the Long Tall House is exactly that: a compact narrow residence wedged between two larger homes that optimizes its livable space with a dynamic design whose elements space upward, outside and even below with a third basement level, all tied together by a tightly wound spiral staircase. In the recognizable Japanese modern minimalism style, the interior is sparsely decorated, though luxuriously appointed in regards to usable and livable space, most notably with an open roof outdoor deck which provides open space on a lot without any front or backyard...

The other architectural feature we admire is the consistent inset of storage throughout the house, especially in the living room which spans out to the kitchen/dining area, with the media center and kitchen appliances set flush in one expansive plane, giving the long narrow room more perceived space.

Additional unique features of Space Space's Long Tall House are the opaque front window sheets that slide various configurations and that reveal the semi-transparent state only at night when the interior light glows through. The back garage is a large brushed metal surface which slides up and down to reveal a parking space, while a triangular loft section of the residence tops off the overall structure while providing an additional interior storage area.

The entire home is remarkable, especially in the heart of Tokyo where space is at such a premium. Top dollar was spent...so why the spiral staircase? I would have preferred an elevator :)

The contrast of the day and night shot is so cool! I love the spaciousness in what could have been a cramped location.

Tokyo has so many beautiful buildings. When I was there last September, I thought it was the cleanest, most civilized city I've ever seen!
The free standing all glass Prada shop is amazing too.

Furnishings would have to be minimalist---it's darn hard to carry furniture up a spiral staircase! But it seems very spacious and well-designed.

Thank you for this post. I'm about to move in a tall long (and narrow) house myself, and I realized one again how important it is to stick to a clean, uncluttered space.

This place is amazing !

Size: 102.69 meters squared? I doubt it, somehow. (It's 10545.2361 square meters.)

Size: 102.69 square meters would be more like it :-)
