House Call: Metamorphoses 1
Chile

Name: Metamorphoses 1; Jose Ulloa Davet, Delphine Ding
Location: Casablanca, Chile
Size: 1937 sq. ft.

Today's House Call post takes us way down south of the equator to the coast of Chile, where we highlight a beautiful beach house whose name communicates the architectural transformation executed by architects Jose Ulloa Davet and Swiss architect Delphone Ding. Once a traditional beach house, the two architects remodeled the home into a form that is strikingly modern, yet is able to blend beautifully into the coastal landscape, jutting out like a feature of the landscape rather than a manmade structure. The home also takes advantage of the stunning views with a series of platform viewing sections and large windows, making Metamorphoses 1 just as much about the coast it resides in as the modern-warmth interior the house provides within...

The home's wood facade should weather beautifully in time, taking on that characteristic patina of coastal wood we've always admired. We also note that the structure was designed to buffer its owners from coastal winds with its helical design which offers a sheltered deck accessible from the living room. It's by no means a small house, but because of the configuration, the Metamorphoses 1 has a relatively small footprint whose majority of useable space is outdoors. And we love how the interior forgoes stark minimalism for modern coastal comfort, the warmth of wood panels mirroring the exterior.

How beautiful - It looks much larger than 1400 sf, probably due to the plentiful exterior spaces and grand staircases.

Agreed, the exterior space is wonderfully integrated into the whole design of the building. There are so many possible living and entertaining options offered by such a design.

I love this! It is like an update on that famous villa in corsica with the stairs to nowhere on the roof (can't recall the name--anyone?).
