Bryan's Fashionable Statement
House Tour

112009bryanboone01.jpgName: Bryan Boone
Location: Downtown Los Angeles, California
Size: 650 square feet
Years lived in: 1/2 year

Situated at the heart of Los Angeles' bustling downtown fashion district, Bryan's impeccably decorated small space is a Jonathan Adler-ish oasis of calm and comfort. Despite luxurious appointments, the space was furnished with a keen eye for good design at reasonable prices, tapping into what Bryan described as an obsessive focus for Craigslist deals, decorating the majority of the 650 square feet with vintage and future design classics bought at a fraction of retail prices. From the clear chess pieces arranged within a lantern to the vintage suit cases just peeking out from underneath the bed, Bryan's home confidently showcases his affinity for design both new and old in memorable fashion.

AT Survey:

My/Our style: Midcentury modern meets Jonathan Adler.

Inspiration: I wanted to something familiar yet one of a kind.

Favorite Element: How the white acts both as a statement and a great compliment to the wood and colors I used in the room.

Biggest Challenge: Over doing it.

What Friends Say: It feels warm and cozy.

Biggest Embarrassment: Having a cleaning lady for such a small space. I'm blaming the windows and the concrete floors.

Proudest DIY: Finding almost every furniture piece on Craigslist. I wanted to re-use furniture and put a fresh spin on it.

Biggest Indulgence: Flat panel television.

Best advice: Do what you feel looks good....you have to live in it.

Dream source: Sunset Bazaar in nearby Silver Lake.

Resources:

Appliances: Bosch oven and microwave, LG refrigerator, washer and dryer in bathroom

Furniture: Craigslist, Sunset Bazaar in Silver Lake

Accessories: CB2, Target, Crate and Barrel, Marshalls

Lighting: Craigslist

Window Treatments: IKEA

Beds: Ethan Allen

Paint: Existing paint when moved in.

Flooring: Sealed and polished concrete flooring.

(Thanks, Bryan!)

this is on a top one for a house tour. I love how the place has dimension and layers and the simple color palate. The woods ad a nice warmth to it.

Hey Bryan I think your design twin is one of my best friends, his place and style are so similar.

I love it! You have done a great job in dividing the space; bedroom, bedroom sitting area and living room and in making the bed of importance and a nice focal point.

The lighting is excellent too. I miss having Bauhaus style operable windows they really make the space.

I understand having a cleaning person, this type of space attracts a lot of dust and dirt especially in LA near the freeways and you need to stay on top of it otherwise everything gets a black film on it.

Fun tour!

I bought this book for your twins birthday, he has everything so perfect in his place , but this was small enough, the right color and the tile is funny, now it sits on his desk-

OMG! Obsessed with this space! I live in LA and go to estate sales all the time and I have been building quite the impressive collection of white animals (my albino army)! So i am in love with your white friends and how you display them! I might be stealing the ornate frame idea for around my albino duck head ;)

Can I just say thank you for what is hands down the best house tour as far as the quality of photos go!

Usually when I start clicking away only about 80% (or less) of the pics are actually ones that I think are worth looking at. This one, 100%.. FINALLY! Every angle possible, no space left unseen, no wondering if there is a kitchen or a bedroom, no me sitting scratching my head trying to figure out why a shot of someone's shoes is popping up on my screen when I thought I was looking at living space!

Hallelujah!

Oh, and fab space btw. It's just at the over the top line, but not over it. And I LOVE the chair at the foot of the bed as most people would not try this since the chair looks a bit too large to really fit, but it works perfectly.

Awesome job, when can I come visit? lol

There are MANY lovely moments here, but to me, there is a *tiny* disconnect between the severe industrial vibe of the space and the softer, slightly more frivolous style of the interior.

And while I generally love a bold accent wall, I think the red one, with it's odd set of doors and vents, was perhaps not the best candidate.

Add me to the list of fans. This reminds me of a shoot from the late lamented Domino. It's a gorgeous, personal, well-designed space -- nice and clean (that cleaning lady's totally worth it and you're giving someone a job in the recession). And I second missnic's comment re: great job with the photography -- it's very clear what the layout is due to wonderful photos from every angle. Kudos to resident, kudos to photographer. Lover-ly!

it way too "spot the trend of the last three years" for me to really see your individual style but perhaps the big trends of the last 3 years are your personal style. Excellent job of having a very unified design theme and doing it on a limited budget and with recycled materials.

I would love to see it in a couple of years when personal pieces and new ideas are added to the existing static design.

The barstools are incredible, the sofa looks modern but comfy... ugh. just incredible.

Even the chair at the foot of the bed has a whimsical "robot" look to it that mimics the monster pillow on the sofa. Don't know if that was intentional with the chair, but it doesn't matter.

What a fun place - it makes you want to be friends with Bryan, which I certainly don't feel about every house tour. I could never live in a space like this - there is far too much going on for me - but I definitely like looking at pictures of it. Actually, the only thing I didn't care for was the Eames lounge chair (although I seem to be in the minority). To me it looks too squished up against the foot of the bed and its height seems wrong for the height of the bed. I would rather see a bench, trunk, low sofa, chaise lounge - something like that. But anyway, great job, Bryan!

If Feng Shui had a little brother it would be you. You have an acute ability to segment your room into distinctive spaces that each exhibit their own individuality and splendor.

This free flowing arrangement is further complemented by unique adornments that are both practical and tasteful. However, I am most impressed by your fusion of originality and modernity with comfort.

This is the type of place you would be happy to entertain in and even happier to call your home.

BRAVO!

This is indeed a terrific house space. It proves that we don't need huge spaces to create homes. The key is to plan the space to fit what you can't live without (if you have been an adult for more than a decade!) or starting new with a very clear idea of where everything will go. I have long fantasized one space for everything with only one door - to the bathroom. I'm sure that all those windows made choosing this space over others that might have been larger or more complicated by walls and doors, a slam dunk. While our tastes diverge in some of the details, the overall feel of the place is fabulous and will give you all the comfort, serenity and beauty you need. Your friends will love coming to see you as well. All I miss is a larger space for eating and conversation.

I didn't see kitchen layout. I liked the openness from bed-to-living space, and the windows to the street. Does anyone live in these spaces?; there's no things-to-attend-to-clutter as in my on-going renovation. I also like the Craigslist buys; I'm up for that AND building my own stuff to make it work for me and the uniqueness of the space, as in the BB's.
