The nicest thing about being able to visit such a landmark is how much of it was unchanged from its original incarnation. The bed linens, the avocado shag carpet, the blue sofas, the light fixtures, all original. Instead of being sparse and cold like today's version of Modern can sometimes be, it was a nice reminder that Modern began as a style for the masses, for families to live in...with stuff. Not just for magazine spreads. Instead of glass walls and white everywhere this home's surfaces were largely covered in wood or cork, the bed linens warm colors of fuchsia and orange, and the home is shaded, instead of being flooded with light (remember it was built before air conditioning). The giant windows offer a view of the oak trees that throw dappled light into the house, keeping the large living space private and cozy.
