House Call: Megan and Peter's Elysian Dream

Name: Megan and Peter
Location: Echo Park, Elysian Heights
>>>View Slideshow

Megan and Peter's Echo Park abode is notable for a couple of things. First, the home was designed by none other than Silver Lake architect, Barbara Bestor, whom many you might recognize from her popular LA decor tome, Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake. The multi-level home's other memorable characteristic is its bright and eclectic palette, befitting for a home nestled in one of LA's most diverse and artistic neighborhoods. Plenty more photos of Megan and Peter's stylish home under the jump and via the slideshow below...

I promise no exclamation points in my critique. Is it fair to love the home more than the decorating?

To me, the bedroom is perfect. Calm and relaxing. And that outdoor space is great, especially the tree swing seat.

But the living area is kind of a jumble. There are too many colors and too many couches. I wonder if the built-ins should go? They don't look very comfortable, and maybe the flat screen could go in that space.

The kitchen needs some serious clutter control.

"Forlikeever" poster? Check. Nelson lamp? Check. Sling chair? Check. Faux taxidermy? Check. Sigh. This is a gorgeous house that deserves a little more thought.

I'm with Bolder,

Love the house and some beautiful elements in it, but yikes that pink pattern. Still I admire anyone who can live with that in peace.

I would have to agree that their style is a work in progress. As a city apartment dweller I'm totally envious of all that awesome outdoor space.

That wallpaper is better than a thousand cups of coffee to wake you up in the morning... and the table is lovely.

DAMMIT another one of those antique rustic dining tables that haunt my dreams. Too bad they are ungodly expensive. If ANYONE knows where one can be made/found for UNDER 1k, please post a link here.

This house is amazing and wonderful full of personality. It makes me happy to look at, but then also sad as that lifestyle is so unattainable to most of us.

I remember this home from Small Space Big Style when it was owned/designed by a (different?) woman and her daughters. I still love the bones of the house (the awesome bridge, outdoor mirrors, double-deep bookcases) but kinda miss her touches (like the paint-splatter "rug") I also love what she'd done with her daughter's room upstairs.

The pink wallpaper in the sitting room here is fun, though.

the best design about this place is the wallpapers. i didn't care for the pink color with the furnishings, but i love the close-up of the pattern..with the cats & birds. and the tree paper was cool.

otherwise i agree with a previous poster, the bones of house are very nice and there are some nice things in it, but...things are kind of jumbled... in colors, items, placements, etc. i almost expected these to be the "before" photos of the "before & after" type of decorating. but, i.m sure it's comfortable to live there.

This house sort of reminds me of a "best of Apartment Therapy 2007."

In a bad kind of way.

a "for like ever" poster, a faux deer head, a wassily chair, a print from 20x200, a "bold" wallpaper, a small parsons tablebold, graphic pillows, a shag rug, an oversized paper lantern...

Makes it somewhat difficult to see the real personality here. Sorry...

This is one of the best tours I've seen on AT. It really looks like a home people love and live in--not staged and picture-perfect like some of them.

It's funny, I barely even noticed the potentially clichéd things like the bubble lamp and the "for, like, ever" poster. I believe that the owners chose them because they liked them, not to fit into a certain prescribed aesthetic.

You can tell this is a great home for entertaining and that the owners have a lot of good parties--they've done a great job with the seating inside and out.

And one last thing--the wallpaper. LOVE it!

The dining area, wall unit (so terrific!) and table and chairs and print all work together SO very well. I take inspiration from it. Like the yellow counter in the kitchen, too. This area is clean, warm and super functional - I bet the flow is just perfect at that table.

But the EIK is a different experience to look at.
The wallpaper is too strong and a poor match for the streamlined brown cushions and honey wood in the eik. Particularly bad with the white plastic cubicle table and stark white pendant lamp. I don't like the pillow pattern against the pink wallpaper either - kind of trying to mix rococo and minimalism. same deal on the deck with the orange fabric...good spaces, maybe even okay colors but wrong combinations and patterns. Sorry. But you've got fantastic foundations there.

The bedroom is cute but you haven't infused it with any personality yet - surprising after the rest of the place.

I love the bookshelf! I think hanging artwork in a bookshelf is a wonderful idea. I've done the same thing with the shelf in my room, only I had limted space to work with so the impact is not as great as this.

First of all, my absolute favorite thing is the Obama bumper sticker ;)! Secondly, I LOVE LOVE the pink wallpaper and I like the contrast of the dark seating against the wallpaper. However, it doesn't look all that comfortable and I wonder if it gets used all that much? I'm sure at a large gathering it does. (Okay, so now I'm arguing with myself). And albeit trendy, I like the faux animal head against the wallpaper. The bedroom, however, doesn't make me happy. It's a little lackluster and makes me feel like I'm trapped in origami....

This does kinda make me sad. It's actually pretty cute, if a little trendy for some, and I love all the colour.

But I did get a weird sense of deja vu about it, until I remember it being on SSBS a few years ago, with different owners with a much more authentic sense of style. The new owners seem to have barely managed to copy it, as if they tried to buy into a lifestyle they don't actually understand. Sad.

What a gorgeous eclectic HOME. I feel like those who currently reside in this HOME have done a wonderful job of inserting their
personality into the space. Living in an architectural takes courage. If you stray too far from the architect's vision you risk being taken to task for that and if you stay too close to the architect's vision you risk being taken to task for that as well.

Disagreeing with another person's style is one thing. To insult them and accuse them of "buying into a lifestyle they don't understand" is another thing entirely. Whether or not you agree with their decorating choices is irrelevant, they are the people who have to live there. Not everyone has the same taste, just get over it already.
