amazing perfection

I inherited the exact same buffet unit being used here as a media stand - what is it called and who is it by? Is there any resale value if in perfect condition?

Nice mix of Modern and Mid-C without the overuse of iconic pieces (i.e. style recognition over name recognition). I think it's the unique and fun-colored vintage pieces that make the space feel fresh and give what would otherwise be a very "new" loft personal character.

I love how it's eclectic, but done in restraint, using colors to tie things together by using similar types of colors, such as rust or bronze with tans and browns, accented w/ pops of red and turquoise and for the dramatic, the black accent walls against the white, which then adds drama to what would be a pallet of gray concrete and I think helps the space sing and tones down the industrialness of the "raw" space a little w/ a little elegence.

I can relate to your statement about continuity. I have the same situation where I've got some elements that carry throughout as well as some distinctive elements in different places but have been working to connect them all.

What kind of heavy duty clamp type brackets did you use to hang those wall panels?

LBhirise - I don't think grease if they use grease will be spraying into the baby's room.
As far as noise this will be the child of two musicians.
The fact that they can see the baby from the kitchen is a good thing.

Thanks. The big grey clamp-looking things on the top of the walls are actually tension loaded braces that are pushing up on the ceiling and down on the wall. The walls are on casters that rotate into the wall and drop down to the floor. The down pressure from the brackets above keep these really heavy walls from falling over. Our contractor actually fabricated these things himself. We gave him the idea but couldn't believe it when he brought the actual pieces in. Amazing.

I think this is an example of why Mid-Century design went out of style. Not that it's not well put together-- it is, but the neutral-on-neutral colors are so drab that this house is almost depressing. The shots of color on the chandelier and bench are nice, but don't do enough to overcome the overall feeling.

This is a really beautiful space. Thoughtfully assembled, genuinely put together. It takes time. If anything it is a little dark overall, but seems to be a really lovely place. congrats on the new baby!

wow. i think the exact opposite of taritac: the use of color is what blew me away. it's not over done, so everything with color feels so important and really stands out. I was just thinking that I've really come to love neutral backgrounds with a few pops of color best of all. I LOVE the turquoise bench, the orange couch, the red chandelier, the gold curtains.

This place is amazing, I love it.
That studio is probably one of the most tidy home studios I have seen, and I love that wall of keyboards/guitar cases... I could only dream of having such an extensive collection.
The rest of the house is equally fantastic, this is my dream place.

Wow. That bracketing system sounds really great. I bet you were excited to see it function for the first time.

I think the first thing that drew me in was the color scheme. While my place is the opposite--bright and with lots of sharp lines--the dark scheme in your place feels classic and comforting. It plays perfectly off the raw nature of the loft space. And the ultra modern chandelier and some of the pops of vibrant colors and other modern furnishings compliment the "den like" personality of the living area keeping it all very modern feeling.

- how wide is the window space?
- can you pull the drapery panels all to one side?
- if so, where did you get the drapery rod? (i'm having difficulty finding a long drapery rod without a support bracket in the middle to accommodate a very wide 8 ft. window.)

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Megustaqueso, the windows in the corner are approx. 8' wide on one side and 17' wide on the other side. We went to the plumbing store and bought the same pipe (but in 1/2") and hangers used for our overhead sprinkler system. Drilling the anchors into the cement is a pain but worth it because the curtains are able to slide all the way to the sides with no support in the middle.

And yeah, pjd, we love the rolling piano too. I actually bought this piano on Craigslist for a few hundred dollars, had it put into a set cart, and then took it on a tour I was doing for most of the year and somehow it survived. Now we can roll it wherever in our home when we record and it almost says in tune.

This place is exquite. I seriously fell in love as I moved through the tour. I am so impressed with the way you pulled this look together and created stylistic unity in light of your electic collection. To be clear, the mix works, because of the variation; you have created a home where everything looks like it belongs together meaningfully, in the space, while still keeping a very livable feel.

There is artistry in the atmosphere; I could move in tomorrow and bring only my toothbrush.

If it is drab, it can't be blamed solely on the MCM. There is just so much exposed concrete. You have grey ceiling, grey walls and grey floors. The wood furniture kind of just blends in a bunch of cardboard browns

The first picture of the living room is a perfect example. I didn't even notice the rug at first because it is about the same colour. It feels more like a warehouse furniture store to me. Sorry.

So flippin cool. I often fantasize about designing a cool, creative loft/apartment for my little brother in film school (I love my husband's and my place, but it's a little more traditional, so I guess these daydreams fill some sort of void), and your place is exactly what I would be shooting for.

Hi Ana... the bedspread and sham covers are from Room & Board. Thanks Chilly and Nikki for the parenting well-wishes. And I agree webherring. We have been trying to figure out how to make this concrete box of a home we have interesting and it's a challenge with so much grey. Hopefully wood floors are going in sometime and that should change things up a bit.

One of the best homes on apartment therapy. As much as I love loft space and the mid-century modern look I feel it can often come off cold. Here the use of color and space makes it seem like a really fun and warm place to live.

Futurevox, the baby rocker is Bloom Coco stylewood rocker (http://www.bloombaby.com/collection/main.php?sID=31). We haven't used it yet but it looks pretty sweet.

And yes birdablaze, that is carpet in the frames in the studio. That was our budget/style solution to acoustic panels for sound absorption in the studio. Shag carpet remnants and thrift store frames. If any of you fellow audio nerds want to hear how an album recorded in our loft sounds, we recorded "The Voice of Us" by the band Fielding in here. It's on iTunes (shameless plug).

This is so awesome! I just bought a place in the same building and am so inspired by what you have done with your space. I was concerned that I would have to get rid of all of my vintage pieces but you've really made yours work with all the concrete.

Of all this Apartment Therapy house tours I've seen this is the one I would most want to live in. I didn't want the house tour to end! Really neat.

Totally amazing. Everyone's already said it better. I almost didn't look because of the "mid century modern" moniker. But the words "musician" and "loft" drew me in. I'm glad they did. This is how mcm should be done. A few great pieces that contribute nicely to an overall great home. I so want to live here (even though I'm a light freak). This place is just so right I become unnerved when I hear that you plan to change any of it.

p.s. love the wallpaper...and the chandeliers. They're the punch that give this place its eclectic charm. Of course the artwork is awesome, and I love the ceilings and the floors. Oh heck, like the other person said, I love everything, it's all perfect.

This is just jaw-droppingly gorgeous! I love the colors and the mix of furniture. It looks cozy, serene, clean, and very livable. I would imagine once all of your windows are open during the day, the dark walls fade away. What a great eye you have for color and style!

I LOVE your space! I especially like the blend of old and new and hope I have as much luck with CA Craigslist as you have. I can only hope that the little studio apt my daughter and I have to cram into will look even slightly as cool as your place.
