My Style: Flea Market Edgy. I like to mix mid-century, tropical-beachy with romantic antiques. I love white mixed in with soft splashes of vibrant color. I want my home to feel cozy yet spacious and uncluttered. I want art and objects to feel quirky and brave almost silly and lighthearted.
Inspiration for my home: The Pasadena flea market. Anything I see will inspire a direction for a room. I also LOVE to thumb through Domino for inspiration. They started my obsession with horns (see dining room) on the wall and some taxidermy.
Favorite element: Not sure exactly what this question means but I like the juxtaposition of my mid-century modern, original Saarinen table with the antique, romantic looking chandelier and the Old-Western Texas Longhorn in the dining room. The room does not follow any period or style.
What friends say about my home: Some say that it has nice flow. Others say it has a nice mix of old and new.
Most embarassing element: Wowhmmm. Its a toss up. It is either our stairwell in our building that we have turned into our personal storage room or the upstairs hall closet that does not have doors. Or it could be the kitchen cabinet door that occasionally falls off (it IS a rental!)
Biggest Challenge: Coordinating whites! When I designed the office, I wanted everything to be white-white. My sleeper couch, Ikea dresser, shelf unit, bulletin board and wall paint are all different tones of white. Sometimes I would examine the white in the store, bring it home and it still wouldnt match the other whites exactly. I discovered that the different lights in various showrooms affects the quality of the white. Other times I would order online and the white on their website would differ drastically from what it looks like in person. Its enough to drive you crazy!
Proudest DIY: My cocktail table. I didnt do it completely myself but I designed it and hired a woodworker to help me sand and stain it.
Biggest Indulgence: My original Saarinen dining table. It was expensive and small but its fabulous. It definitely marked my transition into living into a grown-up home. It represents my confidence in my own sense of style because it was slightly edgy and relatively expensive which means that it must last me at least a decade.
Best Advice: Buy what you like. Eliminate clutter by buying less stuff. Cancel your junk mail (thank you apartment therapy!). Organize your apartment so it flows like a curving river rather than a bowling alley (thanks again apt. therapy!)

I REALLY like the creativity and the feel of this place. Bravo!
I like all the slightly askew lampshades. One I didn't get but seeing that they're all like that makes it nifty.
love it!
How cool! How did you make the air conditioner screens???
Didn't house tours used to include floor plans? This is a pretty apartment but I'm very curious to see a birdseye perspective of the layout to go along with the pictures -- that would give a better sense of how the images comprise the whole.
wow wow wow
i love that you're mixing old & new.
i love the painting in the bedroom.
& i really like the ac screens
Oh! That view! Lovely.
Absolutely charming. Seasons greetings from France!
much thought went into this, love it.
LOVE the coffee table (read that as covet the coffee table)!
Very cool, very eclectic - I like it! And I miss the Rose Bowl flea market - it was a regular haunt of mine. Long Beach flea market, too.
well done!
Love this place!! Good job!!
Thank you all for your comments! Yes, those are AC screens. I purchased the fabric from Urban Outfitters (they have tons of 10' x 10' swatches of different fabrics) for cheap. I just staple gunned it to the inside of the screen. The screens are just custom cut MDF from Home Depot (cheap) with screwed on hinges. The screens made me want to screen everything! If we had a stairmaster or home excercise equipment, I would definitely make a large on to cover it up when we're not using it. The possibilities are endless.
Btw, this apartment is in Cambridge, MA although everything was bought in L.A. I didn't want to cheat but there isn't a Boston site yet - so glad to get all of your feedback! Oh, and the lampshades were not intentionally tilted (oops!) but glad you thought it was part of the style! :)
You have some nice peices.
What's the size of your TV? I just bought that same console for the same purpose, but it's on backorder until February. I have yet to purchase a television, and am wondering what will fit. I'm not planning on going very big, really. Probably just a 32 incher...
Okay - when do I move in??? Seriously - I LOVE your place. I can definitely see the Domino influence. I also agree with the previous post about COVETING your cocktail table. I have been jonesing for a giant piece of gnarled wood to use under glass or on its own as a table. Great job!!
this is so wonderful. you have done an exceptional job selecting perfect pieces. kudos!
