new_housetour08.jpgRobert Sweet's p_House came to our attention when a good friend living down in Redondo Beach contacted us about a residence they admired and passed by during their daily walks around their coastal neighborhood. Nestled between the traditional post-war homes and apartments that line the streets of Redondo Beach, the p_House is a modern live/work architectural update that retains it's historical foundation, literally, while also reaching forward with a progressive use of materials that optimize the home's impact and presence in the neighborhood...

121908p_House00.jpg

Architect Robert Sweet retained the original footprint and foundation of the previous structure to build upon, utilizing the backyard section as the expansion to the original building. This notable aspect of the p_House is the knowing nod to the Southern California lifestyle, a home whose "inside out" spirit is realized with both an ever present view and the quality of light that permeates throughout, utilizing 14' sliding pocket doors, expansive sheets of windows, ventilated skylights, and the removal of interior walls tall expanding the perception of space within while inviting our eyes outward to the pool.

The p_House has several features that were designed with efficiency in mind. A ventilated skylight not only provides natural lighting and warm into the stairwell, but also doubles as a thermal chimney allowing warm air from the house to escape on hotter days.  The passive solar design partnered with high efficient ceiling fans eliminates the need for A/C and the load required to heat the home. Other sustainable building materials and methods used include bamboo flooring, cement board siding, FSC certified cedar, tankless water heater, high solar reflective roofing, low V.O.C. paints, and xeriscape yards, making the p_house an update both architecturally and from the perspective of its long term environmental presence.

AT Survey:

My/Our style: I do not like the word style, but let’s call it modern by default.

Inspiration: The original house’s floor plan, and how bad it was.

Favorite Element: Oversized sliding pocket door to my backyard.

Biggest Challenge: The restraints of the small original footprint had on the design. I didn’t want the new house to grow horizontally on the site.

What Friends Say: When they lay out by the pool, they say they feel like they’re at a boutique hotel in the desert.

Biggest Embarrassment: There’s a Starbuck’s right across the street.

Proudest DIY: Making my kitchen table.

Biggest Indulgence: My large flat panel TV that can swing out 90º so I can watch football from my deck or pool.

Best advice: less is way more.

Dream source: IKEA. Must be selective when you go there, but soooo cheap!

Does anyone have any info on the wood flooring on the base of the shower? I love the look and imagine it feels really soft. Wondering what kind of materials & installation was needed...

Great place.

I can't believe they put a graphic of power lines in the office though-- I've got power lines in my view of the mountains, and I hate it! I want to cut the pole down!

Robert wrote an email update as following:

The wood flooring in the master shower is a custom built teak deck from Teak Works 4 U .

Kitchen table is made from a slab of bamboo butcher block from (plyboo.com) , and the legs are "off the shelf" office furniture legs from here. Hope that answers some of their questions! -Robert

I love this house but what are all these wires? I live in a very small town in France and all street light wires have or are being removed.

what a perfect little house..nice details. I too would like to know the orange piece in the bedroom.

I forget how bright the light is in Southern California so different than Northern Cal..oh I do miss those days of riding my bike from Santa Monica to Redondo soaking up that sun..this house has sparked some nice memories.

Here are some answers to some of your questions: The orange artwork was a gift, not sure where it came from. The power line artwork is just a light hearted play on the view of the power lines in the alley. It is a wall sticker from ferm-living.com.

Thanks for all the great comments!

I am dying to hear about the vanity/drawers in the bathroom... I am redoing a bath now and I would love to have a bathroom vanity that didn't look so "off the shelf". I have duravit for one bathroom but the other is still TBD. Thanks in advance - kudos on a great home.

Reminds me of Mon Oncle without the fish fountain. Not saying that's a good or bad thing...just an impression.
I am jealous of that black stove!

Starbuck's is really your biggest embarrassment? Really? Wow, now my own house embarrassments (reluctance to paint the baseboards, "crispy" yard) seem SUPER embarrassing!

Excentric, the vanity cabinet in the master bath is custom. The sink is durvit, and counters are silestone. However, we did go with an inexpensive Ikea vanity in the other bath.

Green Basil, I'll try to explain the kitchen to you based on your comment. The house is small, and so therefore the kitchen is small. Because of it's size, it's important to keep it efficient and organized. The material palette is simple and bright, which helps make the space feel larger. It does lack the "American appeal" of large Viking appliances, and granite countertops, however we do use it both to cook and eat!

...Continued
There might be some confusion by the small kitchenette you see in one of the images. This is part of the design studio, and is separate from the main kitchen.

Hi steve, amazing house... I am inspired by it's simplicity...

Simple question for you. I am having troubles "placing" the design studio picture (what I believe is the photo with the telephone apply-on and your mac). I see in the plan only one floor-to-ceiling wrap-around window located in your 2nd floor master bedroom. Yet the plan shows your studio to have only a clerestory on one side and the door and window and the other. Plus it seems this room is on the 2nd floor over-looking houses. Am I missing something here? Did the programming for this room change locations?

terrific work!

cheers

No, problem. The "floating" vanity is a custom cabinet design by ras-a, inc. It is installed on a 2x6 wall with custom steel bracket supports screwed into solid blocking between the joists. It's a relatively simple install, and most cabinet professionals are capable of making this. You can contact us through our website if you have any further inquiries (www.ras-a.com).

CWG, you are correct, the photo showing the wall decal and desk is upstairs overlooking the back yard. This was taken when the studio (SE room on lower floor plan) was being occupied with other furniture.

Thanks for the great comments!
