House Tour Update: Gidget Gets a Sex Change

062308derek01.jpgDerek's Gidget Gets a Sex Change remains as one of our reader favourite house tours, thanks to the colourful pastiche of vintage era furnishings and decorations. Derek has been busy updating/streamlining his decor since our March visit and was kind enough to invite us back for an update photo shoot of his living room...

062308derek02.jpgDerek has moved his artwork to the opposite side of the wall, selling several of his collection that previously graced the wall above the couch.

062308derek03.jpgDerek's new dining set and overhead lamp now grace the corner once occupied by a desk (a new desk has been shifted where the bar once sat).

062308derek04.jpgThe entryway is adorned with photos of friends and family from a bygone era.

062308derek05.jpgLove the avocado green napkin holder and salt and pepper set. Derek's next update is to refresh the flooring with new carpeting (grey), and redoing his kitchen. We can't wait to see how that all turns out, and we've been promised an invite when it's all completed.

I way, way prefer the before.

I definitely prefer the after pics. It looks much more streamlined and less cluttered. Although I enjoyed the first house tour, I have to admit that there was way too much going on in the room. It looks so much better with less stuff.

I prefer the "before" as well. It looks way better than "after".

Thanks, the blue chair was original, old pale orange nubby fabric that was worn and my two cats had a field day making worse. It is now a satin powder blue vinyl. I bought it at the Long Beach Antique Swap meet for $90 and just spent $180 redoing. It is very comfy, and I do prefer the less cluttered look. I did like the old pics but it was starting to look like a 60's vintage shop! Derek

Hmm, the "after" is more streamlined and less overtly kitschy. I don't understand the "sex change" reference in the title. In the dining area, the light fixture seems too high and off-center from the table; that bugs. I do really like that the dining chairs are mismatched.

Love both, but love the 'before' better.

In person the fixture hangs lower, I think the pic was stretched a bit to get it all in the shot. The chairs are Burke which was a knockoff of Saarinen and I LOVE the fact they are different colors. Most the Burke sets did have matching color chairs but I think this rare version is cool. I had one several years ago and got bored of the monotone chairs. But, to each his own!

I love the chair and ottoman from the first living room shot. Hope you didn't get rid of them! I do think the new set up looks a lot better though, especially the wall in the living room.

I think it's all awesome! Where did you get that little table with the three circle top? It's unusual and I want it!

I got that on ebay, it looks better in person, one circle is wood grain formica, one orange and one white. Very Danish looking. I should have moved it for the pic but I will find a better spot for it eventually, it is a unique piece.

Thanks!
Does the table have any markings or a maker that I could use to search for on eBay? I really dig it and would love to score one myself...any info you you could give me would be awesome!
Thanks again!

I couldn't find a maker. The legs unscrew, the rounds tops are connected by wood slats. If you want email me and I can send you a closeup pic.

It looks amazing! I loved it the first time around, but now it looks even better! I think it's a huge improvment, thanks for keeping us updated.

I love this place. Colorful, fun, vibrant, retro and full of personality! I love it!

The photos are the only redeeming feature, especially since they're period. The rest of the place before and after reminds me of a 1960s east Harlem beauty parlor. And maybe that's good if you want to achieve that totally plastic look.

I understand that it's "in" to retro that era, but for anyone who actually was sober during that time, it was simply hideous. I think a piece or two would of course be interesting, given that they are design worthy, but to do the whole thing without the color sense of the era, sorry. It just looks like a clown lounge.

I've never visited a home at that time that looked as uncoordinated color wise at this. Trying too hard, fails.

It doesn't surprise me that the above comment was made by someone who leaves 90% negative remarks on here. Instead of just critiquing or giving constructive remarks this jerk feels the need to insult at every turn. Hate to tell you but I was a kid in the 60's and remember it vividly since I wasn't on drugs. Maybe you were and had a bad clown lounge experience. But I would never leave such remarks about someone else's taste just because I don't agree with them. It's just plain rude and obnoxious, but I guess many hide behind a computer these days. If you said that stuff to someone's face you might get punched.
