apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

LA House Tour: Laure's Constant Change

Name: Laure
Location: Venice, CA.
Size: 500 square feet (ish)
Years lived in: 2 years
Inspiration: Other people's homes

As soon as I got word of my eviction, I knew that I wanted to document my apartment before she was taken from me. This was my first place and inspired me to try out all kinds of furniture arrangements and colors. Most of all I just had fun. Eventually I even got inspired to enter the smallest coolest contest and made it as a finalist, thus beginning my relationship with AT. I've never 'finished' my apartment and there are a million and one things I would want to change, but c'est la vie, on to the next place!

We're always looking for more candidates for house tours. If you or someone you know is interested in inviting us for a tour, please email us!

My Style: California Casual?

Favorite Room: Living Room

Most talked about element: The paint color in the hall

Most embarrassing element: That it's never finished. I just keep moving stuff around, so one room or corner is always the dumping ground for what I'm not quite sure what to do with...
That and that I just absolutely love my 'for like ever' poster even though we've all already seen it everywhere. Oh, and that I have a broken mirror in the living room. Anyone have a good glass/mirror person?

Element that makes your knees weak: The original windows and doorknobs and the view. And that I inherited my grandmother's danish modern sofa and chair.

Proudest DIY: Hmmm, I haven't done that much besides moving a lot of furniture by myself and painting.

Dream source or item: A big french farm table and the space to put it in, Muji (can we please have one here), Habitat, and all of the furniture in my other grandmother's apartment in Paris.

Reality source: Craigslist, Estate Sales, Target, Ikea, Thrift Stores

Best advice: Just do it, whatever it is, just jump in, you'll always learn something. That and color is fun. Oh and ask for help. That's a big one. Oh and those discs that you can put under furniture to help move it, invest in those.

Had forever: Well I have a lot of stuff that's been in the family for a while. I inherited all kinds of things from my grandmother (like her dish towels, pillows, plates and bowls, and of course the sofa). I also LOVE old photographs of family. So I have magazines framed in the hall of my mom. She was a model back in the day and I have spent days just going through all of her old pictures. And then I have old pictures of my dad and grandma and as much family as I can fit. It was on my list to create a wall of photos, but it will have to wait for the next place!

Just got:The coffee table in the living room. Found it at an estate sale. It wasn't what I would normally choose, but I decided to take a risk.

Any additional plans?: Now that I've moved, I have a ton of plans, but nothing concrete yet, first I need to get rid of some things....

I love your place Laure! I hope your new one is great too and I know you'll make it great.

I can't wait to see what you do with the new one. It would be interesting to see your move in progress and projects that you take on while making it feel like home.

the landlord is going to be disappointed when she moves in and her stuff doesn't look as cute in the space

Ugh.. my new place is basically a room with my stuff in it. I was so disappointed about the flood that I just kinda gave up.
It's really depressing.

I'll just live vicariously through AT for now. :)

pbona--it's called Provincial Blue. I have to unpack a box to figure out who makes it though!

Laure: Your place is so pretty and home-y!
Love all little details!
Question: where did you get the blue stool (living room) and that awesome lamp (bedroom)?
And good luck with the packing and moving! =(

mimihu--the stool is from west elm but I just checked and they don't carry it anymore. It was dark 'wood' and I spraypainted it that color! The Eiffel lamp in the bedroom is from target, though the one they sell now is slightly different!

I hope we get to see you new place soon!

Laure: Thank you so much! Although there's no Target up here in Vancouver, I will make sure to visit one in my next trip to Seattle!

SO AWESOME. And by the way, who says cats are loners? I think their penchant for being in photos (sometimes every photo) speaks volumes about their need for companionship, and the importance of committing to a cat if you get one.

(Just a little Humane Society plug there)

Ooh, so pretty. I love all the old family photos and the blue upholstery on the sofa and chair. And the working nook. And the gold thrift store flowers. I even think the broken mirror is sort of a fun quirky touch (as long as you're not superstitious). Gorgeous kitty too. Can't wait to see how all your things are remixed in the new space!

this gallery really inspired me to take risks. I am in the middle of a kitchen renovation and a complete apartment overhaul and all the anxiety of decision making has even brought me to tears a few times. your place is a reminder to have fun and surround yourselves with things you love and make you feel home, rather than the "hot trend item" that will have your guests drooling. thank you for this, and I am sure your next place will be just as special!

Yeah, I was curious about the blue too. Seems that its manufacturer is Benjamin Moore.

Just delightful. I love the blue fabric on your MCM living room couch and matching chairs. You certainly have a knack for creating visual vignettes.

So many beautiful touches. I bet your new place will also be fantastic, with a bit of time and shifting things around.
Actually I thought the broken mirror was on purpose - I thought it was an interesting variation.

I'd love to know where your bed frame and side tables are from. We are about to buy the Anders from Room and Board and this bed looks similar.

Hey frontierperson and pbona, I actually unpacked the right box and found the paint: it is a behr premium paint in Provincial Blue. I got it as a matte paint.

and oboista--the bed is the case study bed from modernica and the side tables are vintage.

And thanks to everyone and your kind words, I'm glad you like it as much as I did. And I am every bit as excited as you are to see what will happen to the new place.

hi laure, your apartment is adorable. not too matchy-matchy, warm, and filled with your favorite things. i remember when you entered smallest coolest, i was so envious!

you mentioned that target is selling the eiffel tower lamp now, only slightly different. have you seen it recently? i've been searching FOREVER and can't seem to find it. however, i'm on the east coast. maybe that has something to do with it.

Love this tour , and that we got to see two different furniture arrangements in the living room. Question: is that pale grey/green in the kitchen the same as in the bedroom? What color is/are it/they? Good luck with your new place. No doubt you will bring the same vision, warmth and charm to it.

Nice! I love your use of color. Very light and airy. WIll you come over and pick the colors for my place? I am color blind! :)

I also like the your loveseat and chair. DId you have new cushions made for them or are those orginal. I have two chairs that are similar and I need to have new cushions made for them and I need a source. I especially love the buttons on the back cushion (nice touch).

Good luck with your next place and let us know how it looks!

one of the most tasteful apartments i have ever seen, so inspiring. don't worry about never finishing it, an apartment should always be a work in progress. great hand in finding furniture, new and used.

Tara--the greens in the living room, the bedroom and the kitchen are all different I'll have to look them up, I know that the green in the kitchen was an exterior paint that I just fell in love with and that the color in the living room is called mountain mist.

And steven--yes I had the cushions made (the old ones were SUPER old). I bought the fabric from F&S on Pico in West LA and had the cushions made at sofas and more. I had a good experience with them though they made the back cushions an inch thicker than they were supposed to...

Happily, the style in the apartment is all about your furnishings, which you can take with you.

I've known people who moved from architecturally unique spaces and mourned for years. In a few months, you'll undoubtedly have a wonderful new space that's just as homey and chic.

I love the fact that photos of your family are displayed; I feel like a lot of the AT house tours either skip over family photos or feature people who don't display them. I inherited a bunch of photos from my grandparents when they sold their house, and I'm always interested to see how people display theirs in ways that aren't stodgy...

The beautiful apartment will be a loss, but your good eye will see you through in even the ugliest new building. The white plastic chair, the stool at the writing nook, the artworks, the vintage mirrors, even the "F that S" coaster... all superb.

Laure---

Don't know if you'll see this comment, but just wanted to say that your place is both so sweet and stylish. Can totally tell how much importance you put on your surroundings and that you must get a lot of satisfaction from having put such a place together.

Saw on the slideshow captions that you got the zebra rug inexpensively. Can I ask where you got it? I'm thinking one might look good in my covered patio area, but don't want to spend a lot.

Thx!

lala--I found it at an estate sale!

I just searched for the pain on the Behr website and no such name/color was found for Provincial Blue. Are you sure about the manufacturer? It would be great if you could double check. Thanks.
