[This is our last week of posts from our three finalists, each vying for a spot on the ATLA roster. We continue now with Laure, one of our three finalists will be walking us through a Leimert Park residence...]
Name: Mara and Michael
Location: Leimert Park, Los Angeles
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: almost three years
Inspiration: Color and texture
I have long been inspired by Mara's color schemes and was thrilled when she agreed to this house tour business. The short story is that when Mara and Michael were ready to buy a house they searched all over Los Angeles before finding a beautiful Spanish style home in a little known jewel of a neighborhood, Leimert Park.
We're always looking for more candidates for house tours. If you or someone you know is interested in inviting us for a tour, please email us!
Originally built in 1937, it had beautiful bones but needed quite a bit of work. They've had no shortage of vision and working within a tight budget they've buckled down and transformed it themselves. From plastering and painting to locating the perfect recycled glass doors for Mara's studio to laying out a drought tolerant garden -- you name it, they did it -- all the while maintaining the original character of the place. And the pay off for all this hard work? Check out the pictures. Did I mention that I am particularly jealous of the pink flowered bathroom? Enjoy!
Our Style: Very eclectic
Favorite Room: Either our bedroom or living room
Most talked about element: The disarray and clutter of our office/library
Most embarrassing element: The disarray and clutter of our office/library
Element that makes your knees weak: Original light fixtures in the hallway
Proudest DIY: Turning the garage into my art studio
Dream source or item: Design Within Reach and HD Buttercup.
Reality source: IKEA, Target, thrift stores and yard sales.
Best advice: Projects always take longer than expected.
Found treasure: When digging trenches in the back yard to begin landscaping my husband found an old blue glass bottle with raised letters
"Bromo-Seltzer, Emerson Drug Co., Baltimore, MD" which was most likely left from when the house was first built in 1937.
Had forever: The antique wall cabinet in the pink bathroom.
Just got: The buffet in the dining room
Any additional plans?: Many. The plan most likely to happen soon is building a Wisteria arbor to create an outdoor "living room" and extending the back fence for more privacy and to allow native grape vines to grow. The most extravagant dream plan is expanding the square footage of my studio.

You're absolutely right. That bathroom is awesome. I really like the studio as well. I'm reassured to see what people can do with a limited budget, makes it fell much more accessible to me, even if I do lack the vision...

Oh absolutely. I think I may go burgle their house for those fixtures (is burgle even a word?).

Wow. Love every color on every wall. Could we get a cheat sheet as to what they are? Did you paint those flowers in the bathroom?

Yes Mara designed and painted the flowers in the bathroom. They are even more stunning in reality!

Something about this ecclectic style makes me feel very comfortable. I am all about those green cabinet handles with the white kitchen cabinets and drawers.

I really like your eclectic mix or mirrors and pictures in your dining room! Very inspiring.

Exactly what I thought the style of colorful comfort with visual surprises. My favorite combination.
There is so much that I love. The original light fixtures in the hall, green cabinet handles, original tile in the bathroom as well as original ceramic space heater and pink tub, The flower wall installation in the bathroom, the fireplace and mantle. Their choices in highlighting wall colors.
Mara and Michael have done a superb job of retaining the original feel of this house while adding their own elements to adapt it to their lives as lived. The garage turned studio is a prime example.
Laure, Descanso Gardens, Luna Garcia and now this gem of a do it yourself; please keep giving us inspirations like these.

Wonderful photos Laure. I know the great folks who live in this house and you have captured their home well. It is earthy and funny and elegant all at once, just like the artists who live there.

Unique and character filled home......such a breath of fresh air from usual 'designed' spaces. Where is Leimert Park? You have to be adventurous to find an affordable space in LA. These two have done it right. Thanks Laure for searching out such interesting places.

Cool idea for a post my friend. I esp. love the light. It's interesting how a place that looks 'normal' 40's style house can become like those unique modern spaces people see in more contemporary homes. Inspires me to try some adventurous things with my new apt!

Wow! that is the best treatment for a pink tiled bathroom that I've ever seen!
Kudos for finding a cool way to keep the original tile and update it for modern consumption! Whoo hoo!
Any chance you can share the template for your flowers? I have neighbors in my building with flesh pink bathrooms who would love this solution... and I might try it with my sherbert tiled bathroom!

what I love so much about this place is how totally individual it is, how so not "done" and how ecclectic and elegant and warm it is. it's how I feel about the piece too. to me it's such a refreshing alternative to what so often feels like "canned" reportage about these sorts of things. our homes reflect us and we are all so different and excitingly unique. this home and this piece about it reflect this in the truest sense. kudos and thank you!

The soft light through those curtains really brings the colors to life. A very pleasant balance of vibrant energy and relaxing atmosphere. I can definitely picture myself with a good Costa Rican coffee and a copy of Surfer's Journal in this space. Beautiful!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful arrangement!!

This is by far, one of the best house tours I've seen on AT. I love everything about this home. The unmatched light fixtures in the hallway, the funky bedding, the piles of books on the bedside table, and not to mention the most original use of that dated pink tile I have ever seen. (And I HAVE that pink tile in my bathroom!)
Well done, Mara and Michael! I love your home!!
