Natalie and Nicholas’ Survey:

Our Style: vintage, a little bit of industrial, the 1950’s, found objects and most of all fun!

The Inspiration: Using re-cycled materials / furnishings. Our roof deck is made from tallow wood that used to be seating for a now demolished football stadium. (complete with chewing gum stains on the underside) Our son is also a huge inspiration. Also I like reading interior decorating magazines such as Living Etc, Elle Decoration (both UK), Vogue Living, Inside Out (both Aus) and have recently been exploring the world of blogs such as yours.

Favorite Element: Our growing collections of things (such as the clocks and cookie jars.) we use to style our home.

Biggest Challenge: Utilising the space effectively and having it over three levels.

What Friends Say: There’s a lot of stairs, but they seem to really like it.

Biggest Embarrassment: You can’t see, but at the moment it would be our 3rd bedroom/study. It’s a dumping ground for shop items, paperwork, work in progress etc.

Proudest DIY: Our kitchen cabinetry was found in a dump bin. We borrowed a friends panel van in the middle of the night and rescued it (I was 5 months pregnant), had it sand-blasted and powder-coated then Nick reassembled it to fit.

Biggest Indulgence: Probably the carpet, originally the house was going to be more industrial with checker plate metal stairs and Pirelli vinyl flooring, then we became pregnant and that all flew out the window. I love our carpet in the bedrooms and hallway (not so great- vacuuming the stairs).

Best Advice: Never underestimate built in storage. We have none and oh I wish we did.

Our Dream Source: We would love to travel to the USA and France and scour all the flea and second hand markets.

Thank you Natalie, Nicholas and Arthur for inviting us all into your home!

Resources

Appliances

  • Ilve oven & rangehood

  • Miele dishwasher

Hardware

  • Taps are by Enware, they usually supply hospitals and science labs, but we contacted them and voila!

Furniture

  • Mostly second hand finds or given to us, except for our beds/mattresses. Although Arthur’s bedframe was found by Nick on the side of the road.

Accessories

  • Cushions made by Natalie from old flour sacks

  • Vintage toys and collectables.

Lighting

  • Most if not all are second hand finds. Nick used to be an electrician and has been collecting interesting light fittings for years.

Paint

  • White through out

Flooring

  • Kitchen flooring is Lino tiles. Inspiration was from the nineteen fifties and Big Al’s toy barn in the movie Toy Story.

Window Treatments

  • I bought vintage repro fabric from Repro Depot and had them made into curtains in the bedrooms and blinds else where.

What a fun, happy home! Very deceptive from the exterior. What's with all the people in these tours not making their bed? My mom would kill me!

It's like ice cream! I love the treasures against the bright white walls. Everything looks so clean and loved.

And I love that the bed wasn't made.

delightfully fresh, fun, sophisticated, modern, traditional, classic, clever, cheeky...I've used this word twice this week--inspirational!

I meant your place, not your son's name!

Cheers,

Arthur.

This is really up my alley.

And it's funny--I've grown to hate the color teal, it brings back such bad memories of the '80s, but as an accent in that kitchen, in the context of all that white and all those primary colors, I love it.

Great place, but it wasn't the unmade bed that bugged me, it was the toilet paper sitting on top of the holder. I understand that making the bad can be a pain...I mean how hard is it to change the roll...you are usually just sitting there anyway. Sorry, we all have our quirks but this one sends me over the edge.

Looks like a truly happy home : )

The exterior of your house looks similar to the exterior of mine. I also have an industrial shop door and shop window. Can you tell me what you've done with yours? It looks like they've been made solid white, and I can't tell if it's insulation, drapery, or whatever.
Thanks!

ps: I love your collections, and white walls have never looked so good!

The stackable chairs in the kitchen are intriguing... where would one find something similar?

I'm sympathetic to trixxie's tp peeve. I too suffer from that affliction. However, this is the coolest house ever! I want to start a vintage toy store too! or decorate like i did!

The color style is a lot like mine, but better, and I love it.
I admire and desire the all-white walls thing, but it takes a really specific kind of light --a very white daylight-- and a ton of it, in my opinion, to pull it off, as it has been done here. Unfortunately I don't get that kind of light.

Your place is fantastic!

For many years I managed a small hifi shop, and always wondered how it would turn out if I converted into a home. Now I know!

The scrumpled bed definitely makes a better picture.

Plus, unmade beds were recently proven to be healthier - airing them out kills bacteria and mites.

Sorry to offend or peeve some of you. With a small boy attempting toilet training, our toilet paper lives off the roll holder for the time being. (We pass it to him). I've tried to photograph our home how it is.... although we did do a pretty good tidy up. Perhaps I should have placed the tp on the holder for the photo.
I too love looking at other peoples homes for inspiration and curiosity, but sometimes wonder how people live in houses that look so perfect, untouched and probably stylized by someone else.
It's great to read feedback. So thankyou. And to crafty-femme, they are white mesh, roller-blinds in the shop window. You can see out, but can't see in. (Unless at night with the lights on.) They're the same ones that are in our living room.

I really like the fact than even if there are displays of vintage objects you like, it's not just nostalgia or a projection of the shop, it's your home with a lot of life, energy and fun. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Arthurscircus...when it comes retro styling Melbourne has it all over Sydney. Where are you exactly? Next trip to Melbourne I hope to visit. Really great to see a city in Australia featured in AT. Love the plant stand in the bathroom. Love your colour scheme - teal rules...poking tongue out at JoanA.

I thought it was delightful that the bed was unmade and the TP was not on the holder. It made the house seem welcoming and lived in instead of like a museum... and it made me feel better to know that people are okay with sharing their house "as-is." I always feel like my place has to be immaculate before anyone comes over.

One question: Is it a pain to dust all the collections?

Wonderful house and wonderful photos. (There's nothing like a professional photographer shooting her own house tour!) The mix of vintage and modern is so well done. I especially love the bathroom with its mix of sleek tiles, unique sink and fixtures, and that great light over the sink. I'm happy to see someone else with toilet art in the bathroom. We have a painting of a toilet by a friend in our bathroom. Some people find it strange but you really shouldn't take toilets too seriously. Thanks for the tour!

This is EXACTLY the vibe we're trying to achieve in our own house. I adore the tile backsplash and floors in the kitchen, and that turquoise and white hutch is FANTASTIC!

Very, very well done.

This reminds me of an old fashioned ice cream parlor - pure, clean white punctuated by brilliant pops of color and whimsy. Of all the house tours that I've seen that evoke this vibe, this one is bar far the best, and most sophisticated. (And I didn't even notice the tp off the roll!)

TVs are usually such an eye sore.

I live not so far away from North Melbourne (just across the Maribyrnong River) and I love the area. It's a beautiful home. I'm glad to see someone blend the charm of the old without resorting to it being a stale shrine to the past. It's crisp and yet cuddly yummy. Well done! I have plans (wa-a-a-a-y in the future) of posting my little hive. Such a benchmark you've set for all of us in Oz.

I assumed that the bed was left unmade and the TP off the roll on purpose. You know, to see if we were paying attention.

Love the vibrant colors against the white background. White walls are so clean and classic.

I think my favorite thing is the deep, utility-style sink in the bathroom. Attractive and practical.

I'm going to rain on the parade (just like a REAL Melbourne afternoon) and express dissent. It's impossible to tell where the store ends and the home begins. The white walls show off the merchandise but they're also stark and cold, making the toys into design icons rather than beloved playthings. The living room feels very hostile with those trendy but uncomfortable seats, no rugs and inelegantly aranged cabinetry.

In short, everything here feels like its supposed to be cool and/or ironic, which is welcome in small doses but overwhelming in these sorts of quantities. Or at least that's my opinion.
