Name: Lezlee & Kirk
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Size: 2,100 square feet
Years lived in: 11 years
Many of you should recognize the image above, as Lezlee's art filled home was amongst the most memorable and vibrant of our Room for Color entries hailing from the Southwest. We're following up with a detailed look inside a home whose eclectic and bold character is evident inside and out...a home whose owners renovated and revived a worn 1950's home into an eyecatching ode to the "Southwest, its sunsets, sunrises, and native cultures"...

AT Survey:
My/Our style: We like to think the basis of our style is the motto “never live a beige life” – our home is a marriage of contemporary art, 1950s architecture, & comfort with a healthy dose of eclecticism.
Inspiration: Our art work has really inspired our choices and design – we have bought pieces of art that we’ve loved and then crafted the home around. We bought the worst house in a good neighborhood and have slowly transformed it into a little piece of art itself. In the bones of the 1950s architecture, we saw a way to honor the home’s origins while bringing it into the 21st Century. The bold colors of the southwest, its sunsets, sunrises, and native cultures have also provided inspiration. We also loved the idea of improving on this older home, and not copping out and moving to the suburbs to find something bigger and better – in that sense we feel that we have done something truly “green”. Our home is really a reflection of our personalities.
Favorite Element: It’s hard to chose – every change we’ve made has been our favorite for a while. Right now we love the new outdoor design and the bold color choices we’ve made. Every day we are struck with how much we love the juxtaposition of the sky and the pool and the new structure. From a practical standpoint we love that we’ve created a space where it’s easy to throw a party and invite 100 people – entertain everyone comfortably and with ease, and clean up quickly when it’s over. Also – we love that as we look around we see this wonderful mix of things – some high end purchases, alongside things picked up at at a yard sale.
Biggest Challenge: Figuring out how to get rid of poor design – low ceilings and long dark hallways, while honoring what is good about the original 50s intent. There were some really poor choices made as additions to the home in the 60s and the 70s so our job has been to identify and eliminate those where possible.
What Friends Say: The first time someone visits the house there is almost always surprise. It is comfortable and a great place for entertaining and once people come over to visit, we usually have a hard time getting them to leave!
Biggest Embarrassment: We have no door on the laundry room, a weird pocket door on a bedroom, a bedroom you enter from the kitchen, and a closet/storage area that I hide behind a large hutch because it needs a cool door and I haven’t quite figured that out yet. The jury is still out on the 1950s pink tile in the kids’ bathroom. Some days I love it, some days I think it’s ridiculous.
Proudest DIY: The entire family room, master bedroom and master bath were entirely our design, and with few exception, our own work product. Also, Lezlee designed the couch herself, and we love how it turned out.
Biggest Indulgence: Some of the art work was a little pricey – the Jaime Valero Perandones was a little crazy of us. But we really love it.
Best advice: Buy only what you love
Dream source: We’re absolutely addicted to Craigslist and found treasures. If it’s a one-of-a-kind handmade piece then we’re much more drawn to it then if it were from a fancy store. Doesn’t matter if it’s free or way too expensive for us.

It's really nice. Love the way you've taken the art you like & integrated it into the house - or is it, built the house decor around the art you like? In any case, well done!

Doesn't anyone think the bathroom is a little ordinary, though? It's got a corner bath, with quite boring looking tiles and a few hair/bath products. I say, go all out, go for a roll top bath that's a bit more of a 'wow' factor.... will make a bit more of a statement. Especially if you're trying to complement quite outrageous artwork!

This is a gorgeous home. I would have voted for this home more in the color contest, but I couldn't get past the couch.

I like your house numbers... are they painted on slate, or wood, or ...?

Thanks for the nice compliments -
The outdoor furniture all came from a place here in Phoenix called Passport Imports, I find them to have amazing deals most of the time.
The couch was based on something I saw online and thought maybe I could replicate, but with colors that I liked for that room. I chose the materials but Faith Upholstery did the actual sewing. It's certainly not for everyone but I had a neutral couch in that room before (Well the same couch but it was beige before the re-do) and the room just really felt like it was lacking something. I like it much better with the crazy couch.
The bathroom tiles are a little boring, but this is a second go-round on color for that bathroom - the original design was a little more boring and restoration hardware, I got tired of it and painted a bolder color and then started to add more interesting art. Someday cooler tile may follow. But I LOVE that bathroom (especially our tub and shower).
Those house numbers were a find at a small local store that is now out of business - there are painted tin. My husband hated them at first, but I think they've grown on him.

I especially love the painting in the first picture. All of the art really makes each room special yet ties them all together.
I also love the paint color choice in the bathroom.

How would I get in touch with your upholsterer? I have a similar couch that needs slipcovers, and I'd like to do something inventive . . .love your place!

Your home is totally amazing. Can't decided if I love all the art work inside the house or if your garden walls, furniture etc are better. It is really amazing. There are so many wonderful touches. Bravo. Would love to peep in again in (say) ten years' time.

Where did that wing chair come from?
view chuckloes's profile
To answer a few more questions:
to get in touch with Faith Upholstery in Phoenix, the phone number is: 602-380-3200 (the owner's name is Dale)
That wing chair is totally Ikea.
Thanks for the compliments on the art collection. A LOT of our art has been purchased at Art One Gallery in Scottsdale - wwww.artonegalleryinc.com - they mostly represent emerging artists and so you can find some awesome deals. Many of the paintings we bought there were purchased before the artists moved on to other galleries - so they were incredible bargains. I highly recommend them.
