How To: Make A Low Cost IKEA Cat Bed

020609catbedIKEA01.jpgIKEA Hacker posted this cute pet project from an Italian cat owner who wanted to give her more than pudgy whiskered friend a place to chill:

"My cat Titina is very fat, it is 9 kg and she used me like a bed. Now it is very hot so I was looking for a nice and comfortable place where it can sleep. Looking at the Italian Ikea store, I have found the Bastis Krona at €59 ($69.99) which I thought was very expensive. Looking for something else to adapt I found the Duktig doll bed at €14,99 ($19.99) and I made Titina happy!"

020609catbedIKEA04.jpgVery cute, but like many of the readers mention on the site, we hope Titina is put on a healthier diet (automatic feeder would help) so she can return to slumbering ontop of her owner. More photos and details over at IKEA Hacker's Bedtime for Titina.

So the "hack" was... a slipcover?

I think the "hack" was buying a doll bed instead of the more expensive pet bed. My cat has started laying on me when I go to bed, and when I wake up if I don't get out of bed quickly. She has lots of places she likes to sleep all over the apartment, so by anecdotal evidence, I don't think this will work completely as intended, even if the cat likes it enough to pose for pictures.

We don't know that Titina is not on a "healthy diet." She's just a voluptuous Italian girl.

My two 80 pound dogs have something very similar... It's the queen sized bed in my room.

This makes me so happy, my eyes might pop out of my head upon daily viewing. Making and changing little kitty sheets? The possibilities are endless(-ly entertaining).

LOL! This is hilarious. I just want to curl up with this kitten - he looks like a cuddle bug. I love this idea, but I don't think my kittens would ever use something like this. They love their scratching posts and windows, but rarely sit in their kitten beds. :)

Love the expression on that cat's face in the last photo. Imagine a cigarette sticking out of her paw.

My cat has a doll playpen. Seriously. I got it from a garage sale a few years ago for one dollar, and he thinks it is the best thing EVAR. He sleeps in it, plays with his toys in it, and usually it sits on the side so he can smack at toys through the mesh. When he gets his morning crazies and dashes like an idiot through the house, he usually lands in the playpen and flips himself over in it a few times. Highly amusing. :)

Like madsarah mentioned, Titina might already be on a healthy diet.

My cat's a round British Blue, weighing in at 28lbs; however he's only ever been fed the vet- recommended 1/2 cup of dry food in the morning and 1/4 in the evening. Some animals, like people, are genetically programed to be bigger.

Pikku, love the pic of your kitty in his playpen!
I thought the bed was going to tell about the wooden part, where is that from or what is it?my guys prefer sleeping horizontally on the bed, allowing me a few inches on the side.

Maybe the hack included putting a heating pad into the bedding. (That's what the blue thing in the picture looks like to ma, anyhow.) (And woudl definitely make a dill be more appealing to MY cats!)

I bought them individual heated beds already, or I'd try this myself. (Spoiled cats!)

Too cute, I think I'll have to get one of these and paint it for my cats to share. They'll probably still sleep on the furniture, that that thing is adorable enough that I wouldn't care.

thank you for this great idea. My 4 months old Lhasa loved his new bed! I also bought a baby pillow instead of using just the thin "comfort" that comes with this bed.
